Jesus our Teacher

We focused on Tuesday's Feast of All Saints as our worship theme this week. Jesus takes the time to sit and teach his followers, sharing the famous values expressed in the beatitudes.

This week offers us the opportunity to recognise the important influence of teachers on our lives. By the term, "teachers", we don't just mean the adults that impart knowledge in school. The Church recognises our parents as the first and best teachers of our faith.

We have asked the children to reflect on what makes a great teacher and to tune into the lessons that Jesus is trying to teach them this week.

All Saints 2022

Finding Factors

Year 5 put their times table knowledge to the test this week, looking for factors and common factors. Using Venn diagrams (in the form of PE hoops!) they worked in teams to compare and discuss their findings. The children particularly enjoyed working in the great outdoors, making the most of the additional space and light to help sharpen their mathematical thinking.

Spooky Signs

A Halloween themed update from Sign Language Club this week. I particularly like the sign for "sweets"!

Going to Church

Continuing our learning of signs and symbols used in Baptism, Year 1 were excited to go over to St Mary's Church on Monday to explore these signs and symbols in real life. We went on a scavenger hunt to find them around the church and then talked about why each of them was important for Catholics. We very much enjoyed being in the House of God, seeing the size of the Easter Candle and the representation of Jesus on the Cross to take away our sins, just like a Baptism does.

Smarties in Year 2

This week children in Year 2 have been learning about adding one-digit and two-digit numbers using tens and ones (dienes). If you attended the Maths workshop you will remember the methods we used to teach this. However this week we made it a bit more interesting by using Smarties to represent the 'ones'. Children loved this practical way of adding and then produced some lovely work alongside it.

Georgia gets cooking...

Congratulations and thanks to Georgia for sending in these awesome photos of her preparing soup and casserole after her visit to the school allotment. Georgia helped to harvest the butternut squash patch and then took some home to clean, peel, chop and enjoy! I hope it tasted as good as it looked?

November’s ‘Right of the Month’ is:

Article 38 You have a right to protection in times of war. If you are under 15, you should never have to be in an army or take part in a battle.

During this month we celebrate Remembrance day on the 11th November.

This day commemorates the signing of the armistice between the Allies and Germany at 11 am on 11 November 1918 – the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month.

You may like to think about countries where children are affected by war such as Ukraine and Iraq. How do you think war affects children? What could we do to help?

This month we also celebrate Anti-Bullying week. This year has the theme of ‘Reach Out’. Think about how you can reach out to your friends and classmates.

Lighting up Nursery

In ladybird class we have been learning about Diwali, the festival of light which lead us into the theme of fireworks. The children thoroughly enjoyed making their own edible and tasty sparklers. Meanwhile, Butterfly class have been celebrating bonfire night this week. The children have been making their own sparklers and rockets using various collage materials. We’ve also been mark making in colourful glittery sand. As a special surprise the children all got to have a turn with real sparklers!

Walking tall in Year 3

This week, as part of our PSHE curriculum, Year 3 children have participated in a new programme called Feet First: Walking Training delivered by trained Walking Instructors employed by Surrey County Council. It aims to provide pupils with road safety skills to better enable them to safely walk to and from school with their parents and carers and prepare them for independent travel. After completing some online classroom based activities, the children practised using the zebra crossing in the school grounds and on the Aldershot Road correctly. They also learnt about different shaped road signs, their meanings and different types of crossings. After completing the training, the children were delighted to take home a certificate, pencil and key ring. The instructors commented on the children's excellent answers to questions, attentive listening and exemplary behaviour whilst outside. Well done Year 3!

Evolution and Inheritance

This week in Science Year 6 have started a new unit on Evolution and Inheritance. In our first lesson, we were able to use our learning from our Living Things unit to help us understand how we know different species are related. We then discussed what characteristics we have inherited from our family and the difference between an inherited feature and an acquired characteristic. We listed hundreds from tongue rolling to freckles and dimples as well as musical talents and athletic ability. We then put our learning to the test (and also had great fun) seeing if we could work out the parents of a range of Mr Men and Little Miss characters and what features they had inherited or possibly acquired.

Drama in Egypt

Year 4 have enjoyed their first history lesson of the term, being introduced to the Ancient Egyptians. Their first lesson consisted of understanding when the Ancient Egyptians lived in relation to the other periods they have studied (including the Stone Age and Ancient Greeks). They enjoyed creating a timeline and then re-enacting several scenes from the book Secrets of a Sun King by Emma Carroll (which we are reading in English) to gain a better understanding of the worries of King Tutankhamun.

Reception light the way

This week we have been exploring light and dark. We read a fantastic book 'The Dark' by Lemony Snicket, which got us thinking about how the dark can make us feel. The children built a darkness den to look at how light can change - torches, electric candles, tissue paper, light boxes, glow in the dark stickers.

Finally we looked at a piece of artwork by Van Gough - can you guess which one? We created our own versions of it using different shades of blue and yellow to represent light and dark.
