B - Holy Trinity

Three in one

Our focus this week has been the upcoming celebration of Trinity Sunday - an opportunity to consider more deeply the mystery of God himself: one God in three persons.

We hope to help children to see more clearly that the concept of the trinity is far more familiar than they might realise: I am Mr Collins in school, I'm Tom to my friends, I'm Dad at home. We can all be three in one. Equally, the magic of three can be seen all around us: water-ice-steam are three states of matter but the same chemical compound. If you're into geocaching, MTTs are also another great example of three (or more) in one!

Helping children to recognise these patterns may help them to appreciate more clearly the different ways we can encounter God himself.

Going Global!

It's been Global Goals Week at St Joseph's and in Year 3 we have focused on goal number 2 - Zero Waste. We began the week by discussing how much food is wasted in school. Every lunchtime, Year 3 put their food waste in a separate bin and we weighed it to see how much waste we created. We tried hard to eat a little more each day and therefore reduce waste. Using 'wonky' or 'imperfect' vegetables from a supermarket, we practised our chopping and cutting skills to make a delicious vegetable soup in a slow cooker. We all enjoyed tasting it! In English on Wednesday we wrote a letter to our local Tesco asking them questions about their food waste. Each class thought of super questions such as 'How much food is wasted each day?' 'How do you decide which charities to donate to?' and 'Do you give spare fruit and vegetables to farmers to feed animals?' We hope to receive a reply from Tesco soon. It has been a fascinating week and has made us all more aware of the food we waste.

Creators, shapers and motivators

In Witness Worship this week, Mrs Richardson helps us to see that we can all demonstrate traits of the God the father, God the son and God the Holy Spirit in our lives.

Mrs Richardson introduces us to the biography of Captain Sir Tom Moore. As she takes us through his life's story, she reveals how there were times when he was called to be a creator, a shaper and a motivator - living out three roles in one amazing life.

Things get prickly in Year 1

A very special surprise happened in Year One this week... A visitor called Graham brought in two ten-month-old hedgehog brothers, Harry and Henry, that he has been caring for over the last few months. The children were so delighted and incredibly calm as each class was introduced to the brothers. As the children watched intently, they asked Graham lots of interesting well thought out questions:

How old is that hedgehog?
How long do hedgehogs live?
How well can they smell?
How many spikes does it have?
How fast can he walk?

Eventually it was time for the children to say goodbye to Graham and the hedgehogs and complete their own drawings of hedgehogs!

Remembering Mrs Haigh

Our friend, Mrs Haigh

It was an extremely sad week for St Joseph's as the news that our beloved friend and colleague passed away on Monday. Miss Green and I spent Tuesday morning in worship with St Hilda's Class, thanking God for the amazing gift of Mrs Haigh.

The children were remarkable; sharing beautiful (and often very funny) memories of Mrs Haigh's games, storytelling and silly voices. They loved her dearly.

We spoke to the children about heaven - using the wonderful resource YouCat for Kids. On p.98 it describes how, after death, "God himself is waiting for us: with thousands of angles and surprises".

Year 4 save the oceans

In Year 4 this week we have been looking at the Global Goal 14 - Life Below Sea. The children explored the themes of overfishing, acidification and marine pollution.

In maths we completed graphs to identify the patterns of overfishing.
In science we explored food chains and the devastating impact if a food chain changes.
In geography we set up a seaside town and discussed the human impact on the ocean and how it affects businesses.
In art we combined our texture topic with our chosen theme. The children used recycling and different mediums to represent pollution, acidification and overfishing.

1F class assembly

Finding Christ in 1F

In a beautifully arranged class worship, St Francis' Class end this week's Gospel theme by exploring what Christianity is. They explain what our shared beliefs as a Christian family are, as well as exploring what Christianity means to them individually.

The children have prepared and shared some touching examples of praise: with singing, signing and smiling!

What an uplifting way to end a busy half term. Well done and God bless you 1F.

Equal Right in Year 5

This week, Year 5 have been focusing on the Global Goal of gender equality. We have learnt about equality in the UK and how votes for women was initiated as well as where in the world gender inequality is most prevalent. We have ended the week by producing placards to promote gender equality across the world.

In this week's bedtime story, Mrs Willis (and the three bears) get their own back on Goldilocks!

Saving the planet with Year 6

Water, water in Year 2

Year 2's Global Goal this week was clean water and sanitation. Did you know that clean water is one of our children's rights but 144 million people don't have access to it? They have to get their waters from lakes and rivers instead, which includes a 4 or 5 mile walk each way. On the way back they also have a heavy bucket to carry! We have explored toilet and tap twinning and are currently putting in plans to raise £60 to twin another toilet in school or twin a tap to help a poorer community. We have also been busy learning a song to help to raise awareness...
