"A book is a device to ignite the imagination." — Alan Bennett
As you step away from the classroom and dive into the sunny days ahead, I want to wish you all a fantastic summer full of relaxation, fun, and wonderful adventures, both out in the world and inside the pages of a great book!
Reading during the summer isn't just about keeping our minds sharp for the upcoming school year; it’s a passport to new worlds, thrilling mysteries, and unforgettable characters. This summer, you have the incredible opportunity to pick a book that truly speaks to you and share your journey through a creative "Movie Poster" project.
To give you some inspiration, I have attached a couple of creative "movie poster" samples to the project document. Take a look at them to see how you can bring your favorite summer read to life! I can't wait to see your unique designs when we return.
Remember that even though school is out, I am still here to help. If you or your parents have any questions about the summer reading list or the poster requirements, or if you want a great book recommendation, feel free to reach out to me. You can email me anytime at cjohnstone@stjaneschool.com.
Get ready to read, create, and imagine. Have a beautiful, book-filled summer, and I will see you all in August!
Warmly,
Ms. Johnstone
I am the 6A Homeroom Teacher and will be teaching them Religion and Language Arts. I will also be teaching both classes, Reading and Social Studies.
This is my 19th year in education, and I have had the joy of teaching a wide range of grade levels and learning needs. My background includes:
8 years at St. Jane’s in 6th grade, 3rd grade, Kindergarten, and Preschool
2 years at St. John Vianney in Allentown, teaching K-Power
9 years in Autistic Support (K-2, ASD)
I am also a proud mom. My son, Colin, is a graduate of St. Jane’s and Notre Dame High School and is now at DeSales University, studying Biology to become a Physician Assistant.
What We’ll Be Learning This Year
Reading – We will begin the year using the Reading Wonders textbook series to review skills. Students will then delve into several novel studies, including "Restart" by Gordon Korman. Novel study assessments will focus on comprehension, concepts, and vocabulary, broken down by chapters. In addition, students will complete independent book reports, explore short stories, and participate in a unit on poetry.
Language Arts – Our writing focus will include journal writing as well as narrative, opinion, persuasive, informative, expository, and even limerick writing. For grammar, we will use Voyages in English. All units will begin with a review to reinforce the skills they have learned, then introduce new skills to enhance their grammar.
Religion – This year, we will study the Old Testament using the Christ Our Life text to deepen our understanding of faith and scripture.
Social Studies – Our year will focus on Ancient Civilizations. We will explore the geography, religion, achievements, politics, economics, and social structures of the Stone Age, Mesopotamia, Egypt, India, China, Greece, and Rome. Students will also strengthen their map skills and discover how geography shaped these cultures through hands-on and collaborative projects.
Students will learn through a variety of engaging activities, including note-taking, study-skill practice, class discussions, creative projects, group work, and assessments that incorporate written, digital, and project-based learning.
I am looking forward to a wonderful year of learning, growth, and faith with Class 6A! Together, we will build a supportive classroom community where students feel encouraged to try new things, grow in knowledge, and live out our school values of being Responsible, Respectful, and Safe.
