Hello 3rd Grade Families,
I hope you all have had a wonderful week! The first week of the 2nd quarter has been off to a wonderful start, and I look forward to meeting with you all on Monday! Some of the kiddos’ favorite parts of this week included jigsaw teaching where they learned a new concept in one group, and they then got new groups with a member of each new topic and they taught each other. It was very exciting to see the students become more comfortable with teaching each other and learning from each other’s perspectives.
ELA
The troops started off the week by introducing 8 new vocabulary words and familiarizing themselves by several cooperative learning strategies. We also went over the different components of our new genre in historical fiction. We then read a new story from Tuesday and Wednesday. Both stories this week focused on immigration stories that went through Ellis Island. Finally, on Friday they took a test after a short review game over comprehension and vocabulary. Next week we will go on a virtual tour of Ellis Island!
Spelling / Phonics
In spelling and phonics this week the troops were given their ten new words on Monday. Each word focused on either a long a or a long e sound. We talked about the four different ways to spell the long a sound (a, ace, ai, or ay). We also talked about the four different ways to spell long e (e, vce, ee, or ea). When then assigned a name called Vowel teams when two vowels are next to each other to make the long vowel sound.

In religion this week we wrapped up our unit on the apostles' creed. To do this we studied the verbs, and each day we took the time to memorize a portion of the prayer using sentence strip manipulatives.
Math
In math this week the troops finished lesson 25 on Monday. On Tuesday and Wednesday they did a test review and took the test. On Thursday the students reviewed the three different kinds of subtraction word problems, and with partners came up with their own examples to do for their homework. Finally, on Friday the troops played the math game they did the previous week with a change in the rules, and were asked to write a reflection on if the rule change made the game easier or harder, and why.
S.S / Art
In social studies we continued to learn about our government. We did many different graphic organizers in their interactive notebooks. The graphic organizers included information about the three branches of government, our representatives for the state of Missouri, and a review of vocabulary words.

Hello 3rd Grade Families,
I hope all of you have had a great short week, and enjoy the long weekend with your kids! Some of the kiddos’ favorite parts of this week included reviewing vocabulary from ELA and S.S. by playing the game “Headbands” with their words. They also enjoyed their game using square tiles to reinforce place value through manipulatives. Another spotlight moment was when they finished their reports on their national monuments and landmarks. Some of the other things we learned about this week included:
ELA
The troops started off the week by finishing their research on their national parks. They organized their research into an outline, and typed up their final drafts. I really enjoyed getting to see them immersed in the full writing process. To finish out the week, we read another expository text over the voting process that included learning about debates, polls, and primaries.
Spelling / Phonics
In spelling and phonics this week the troops were given their ten new words on Monday. Each word focused on the vowel constant e (VCE) pattern, along with a schwa sound. All of their words ended in age, ate, and ive. We then spent the rest of the week dissecting how to break our words into syllables. We also analyzed patterns in schwa sounding vowels. Next week, they will be focusing on the different spellings of the long “a” sound.

I do not send many tests home in the 1st or 3rd quarters because I like to keep them on file for conferences. If you have any questions on your child’s individual work I would be happy to answer them!
Please have your child bring back the pre-conference form on Monday or Tuesday. This will allow me to help focus on mutual topics regarding your child’s education during our short conference time together.
Please schedule your conference with the link Mrs. Quinlin sent you. If a time on Monday does not work, I would be happy to meet with you another time that week that works best for your family! If you would like a longer conference than 15 minutes, please email me directly and let me know asap.
As the weather gets cooler outside please have students dress for the weather.

Hello 3rd Grade Families,
I hope you all have had an amazing week and an enjoyable weekend with each other. I want to apologize for not getting this sent out on Friday and thank you for your patience! Some of the kiddos’ favorite parts of this week included meeting with their Falcon Faith Families twice, math Kahoot, and an educational game that had students use their context clues and geographical knowledge to see what major city in the world or country they were in. The game was called City Guesser. (I embedded the link because many of the kids said they wanted to play it at home) Some of the other things we learned about this week include:
ELA
In ELA, students wrapped up the genre study over argumentative texts. They read two different short texts that involved preserving national parks, monuments, and landmarks similar to our stories in the previous week. They continued to work on the following skills:
Fact vs Opinion
Main idea and supporting details
Point vs counterpoint
Prefixes and Suffixes
Same word, different meanings
They also began to research their own national monument. They will continue to write more about these in the next two weeks.
Spelling / Phonics
In spelling and phonics this week the troops were given their ten new words on Monday. Each word focused on the schwa sound. We then spent the rest of the week dissecting how to break our words into syllables, and how the schwa is a lazy vowel sound that makes the “ih” or the “uh” sound.
Grammar
In grammar, this past week the troops had a review week of their last five grammar units. To do this we focused each day on what they learned in previous weeks. They then had the opportunity to retake each of their previous tests. I will take the better score out of their retake and their original score. Please allow a little extra time for grading papers this past week as it takes time to revise and edit grades.
Religion
In religion this week we had two different mass days, and one Falcon Faith Family, so with the two remaining days we were introduced to what makes the Catholic community so special. This week we will be talking about how nouns are important in the Catholic community.
Math
In math this week the troops completed four different lessons that focused on different kinds of scales and how each of them measure a different thing such as thermometers measure temperature, rulers measure inches and centimeters, clocks measure time, and etc.
Science / Art
In science we analyzed our weather data from last week. They then did an experiment on the different kinds of severe weather and how to stay safe in each of them.
