Hello 3rd Grade Families,
I hope you all have had a wonderful week! It seems crazy how close we are already to Thanksgiving break! Some of the kiddos’ favorite parts of this week included finishing their saint reports, veteran’s day assembly, and their textured turkeys they made in art. Some of the other concepts the students learned included:
ELA
In ELA this week the troops were introduced to eight new vocabulary words. This week we were in the familiar genre of expository text. Our essential question that helped determine the purpose of ELA this week was “What do we know about Earth and its neighbors?” They read two stories, and took a final assessment over their comprehension and vocabulary. Next week they will use their skills that they learned this week to write their own planet report.
Spelling / Phonics
In spelling this week the troops were introduced to r-controlled vowels. They were primarily on the “ar” and “or” r-controlled vowels. This foundation will help them next week as we introduce more ways to spell the r-controlled vowel phonemes.
Grammar
In grammar the troops learned to write and identify verbs in sentences. They also expanded their knowledge on the colon, and quotation marks.
Religion
In religion this week the troops began to turn their research of their saints into rough drafts. On Wednesday they went to mass. To wrap up the second half of the week the troops did peer revisions on their drafts, and typed up a final copy to post in our school. (You will be receiving copies of their reports next week)
Math
Monday: The troops reviewed x2’s and 10’s facts. They also learned the strategy for x5’s facts, which is to halve x10’s facts.
Tuesday: Reviewed x5’s and introduced 0’s and 1’s facts.
Wednesday: Introduced square facts and how they are any number times itself.
Thursday: Introduced x4’s and taught the strategy of double the double.
Friday: Review Day
Disclaimer: If you do not see much math work being sent home it is because they are taking very detailed notes using graphic organizers that they will keep in their interactive notebooks as a resource that will help them the remainder of the school year.
S.S
In Social Studies the troops studied more about the meaning and the symbolism behind the pledge of allegiance. They also learned more about the history of Veteran's Day. (For those of you who have served, we appreciate and honor your sacrifices! Thank you for your service!)
Upcoming Dates:
2nd Quarter Midterms Tuesday, November 16th
Mass is on Wednesday, November 17th
MASS ROLES
Server: Torri
Petitions: Katherine and Ryleigh
Song Leader: Landon
Thanksgiving Break 23rd-28th
Freundly Reminders / Updates:
Please have your students bring coats, hats, and gloves as the weather gets colder.
Please remind your students to have their homework done, and that it is their responsibility to complete it.
Please continue to practice math facts with your child. (Addition, subtraction, and multiplication)
I hope each of you has a very blessed weekend! Stay warm!
With gratitude,
Miss Heather Freund

Hello 3rd Grade Families,
I hope you all have had a wonderful week! This week, like every other, was no exception to a jammed pack week full of fun and learning. Some of the kiddos’ favorite parts of this week included Falcon Faith Family Mass, multiplication stations, and working on their saint reports. Some of the other concepts the students learned included:
ELA
In ELA this week the troops were introduced to eight new vocabulary words and were fascinated by the unique and many forms of poetry. We read and dissected several poems using their vocabulary words throughout the week. On Friday, the students participated in a guided poetry lab where they analyzed different forms of poetry and explored different concepts they chose.
If you want the website name it is called: poetryfoundation.org
Spelling / Phonics
In spelling this week we focused on a review of spelling vowel teams and two of the long “e” vowel teams including “ey and ie”. They just completed their tenth unit, and as a celebration they created their own spelling menus based off ones in the past.
Grammar
In grammar the troops learned to write and identify revisions in writing on possessive nouns for singular, plural, and collective nouns. They also practiced this skill in their journals.
Religion
In religion this week we went to mass twice, along with continuing our research on the students’ saint reports. Next week they will be putting all of their research into rough drafts. (Their research looks phenomenal and I have loved seeing the students’ connections grow with these saints.)
Math
At the beginning of the week the troops reviewed the four multiplication strategies they can apply for any multiplication fact (repeated addition, groups of, arrays, and skip counting) They have become very familiar with these strategies, which is an excellent foundation for a base understanding with the relationship between multiplication and division. The remainder of the week was focused on individual strategies for a certain multiple. This week’s multiples were x2’s (doubling strategy) and x10’s (moving place value to the left and a zero strategy). Next week they will be learning four more multiples strategies.
Disclaimer: If you do not see much math work being sent home it is because they are taking very detailed notes using graphic organizers that they will keep in their interactive notebooks as a resource that will help them the remainder of the school year.
S.S
In Social Studies the troops took an assessment on our government, and to wrap up the week we began to learn about the importance of the Pledge of Allegiance.
Upcoming Dates:
AUCTION IS TOMORROW - I have included a fun Christmas Sugar Cookie Party as a fun option for the students! (Our class art projects are some beautiful planters the students made themselves.)
Mass is on Wednesday, November 10th
