Hello 3rd Grade Families,
I hope all of you have had a wonderful week. I apologize I forgot to send the weekly email last week, but I appreciate your patience greatly! Some of the troops favorite things we did this week were working on our realistic fiction stories, practicing geography skills, and beginning a measuring unit! Other things the troops focused on this week were:
ELA
In ELA, the troops are immersed in the genre of Realistic fiction. Last week we read the anchor text “Clementine” to be a model for them. This week the kiddos have participated in the writing process for their own realistic fiction stories.
Monday: focused on including dialogue.
Tuesday: Setting and plot
Wednesday: Character mapping
Thursday: Rough drafts
Friday: Rough drafts and revising
I am really looking forward to seeing their final products come to life in the near future.
Spelling and Grammar:
In spelling the troops focused on the /ou/ phonemes. They learned the two different ways to spell the sound, and when to apply them.
In grammar, they learned the two different jobs of the apostrophe, possession and contractions.
Religion:
In religion we continue to read the verses that come from the rosary. This week we read the scripture focused on the joyful mysteries, and next week we will focus on the luminous mysteries.
Math:
In math this week we continued to expand our knowledge on fractions by learning how to compare them, draw them on a number line, and read them on a ruler. Another skill that the troops learned was what a square root is and how to square a number.
Social Studies:
In social studies we continued our map unit by practicing skills in cardinal directions, map keys, and scales.
Other News:
Snow Situations
If the temperature is above twenty degrees fahrenheit we will go outside for recess. This means students will need to bring snow pants, boots, hats, gloves, and a warm winter jacket in order to participate.
Please send these things in a bag with your student, that way we prevent mix up items.

Hello 3rd Grade Families,
I hope all of you have had a great week. We have had a lot of illness this week, and all of you have been in mine and our class’s prayers for a healthy recovery or to remain healthy. Here are some of the things we were able to do this week:

In ELA this week the troops were in the genre of expository text. They focused on the reading skill of cause and effect by reading and learning about the events that led up to the creation of the national anthem.
Grammar / Spelling
In grammar this week the troops learned the multiple purposes of commas in letters, dates, and in their writing. They also focused on noun and verb agreement.
In spelling the troops were introduced to the /oo/ sound. Next week we will be focusing on the /oy/ phonemes and graphemes.
Next week’s spelling words will be sent home today since there is no school Monday.
Religion:
The troops did an excellent job in their very first all third grade mass this week. In addition to mass they attended adoration and have been learning how to pray the rosary.
Math:
In math this week the troops added onto their knowledge of place value by extending it all the way the hundred thousands. They also were introduced to area in quadrilaterals.
S.S.
In S.S. We began our map unit and studied some of the essential components all maps contain.

Finally, the kiddos took math and reading benchmarks and all of them had a very positive attitude!
