Hello 3rd Grade Families,
I hope all of you have had a wonderful week! Thank you so much for wonderful conferences! I enjoy getting to talk with each of you about your great kids! It is always a joy. Some of the things we did this week include:
ELA
In ELA, the troops were introduced to the new genre of fairy tales. They learned eight new vocabulary words and practiced the skill of finding a moral to stories and sequence of events. They did this by reading two different fairy tales, both stories being spin offs of classic fairy tales.
Spelling and Grammar:
In spelling the troops extended their learning on the consonant le spelling.
They also went on a “consonant le hunt” and partook in Fluency Friday which helped them with fluency, accuracy, and comprehension in their reading and in their spelling words.
In grammar, they worked with matching present tense verbs to the correct amount and gender.
Religion:
In religion this week we have been learning the stations of the cross. On March 31st they will partake in leading it themselves at 1:00. You are more than welcome to watch them participate!
Math:
In math this week we completed the following:
Tuesday: Practice Test
Wednesday: Test
Thursday: Investigation about Decimals, percents, and fractions
Friday: Looked and corrected tests and a new math card game called “closest to 100”
Science:
In science this week we were in the “Explain phase” of unbalanced and balanced forces. During this the troops read different articles and reasonings about how gravity pulls things down towards the earth.

I have really enjoyed and cherished every moment with your kids and your families here at St. Greg’s, which makes me sad to say that I will not be returning next year. This decision did not come easy at all, since this has been my second home for the past four years. However, I accepted another teaching position that will allow me to be closer to all the people I love! I appreciate all your love and support!
Have a wonderful weekend!
God bless,
Miss Heather Freund

Hello 3rd Grade Families,
I hope that all of you had a beautiful week with this early taste of spring weather! Some of the troops favorite things we did this week were, Ash Wednesday Mass, a science experiment at the park, and simply the beautiful weather. This week we also did the following:
ELA
In ELA, the troops were introduced to the new genre of biographies. They learned eight new vocabulary words and practiced the skill of supporting the author’s point of view. They did this by reading two different biographies, both about women who fought for equal rights.
Spelling and Grammar:
In spelling the troops were introduced to ng and nk chunks.
They also went on a “chunk hunt” and partook in Fluency Friday which helped them with fluency, accuracy, and comprehension in their reading and in their spelling words.
In grammar, they reviewed pronouns and proper nouns in different forms of writing.
Religion:
In religion this week we had FFF mass for Ash Wednesday. They also took a pretest over the liturgical season of Lent. We also began introducing the three pillars of Lent (almsgiving, fasting and prayer). Each student set a goal in each category.
Math:
In math this week we completed the following:
Monday: Lesson 46: Relating division to multiplication (fact family houses)
Tuesday: Lesson 47: Relating division to multiplication Part 2 (writing division three different ways)
Wednesday: Lesson 48: Two digit by one digit multiplication with regrouping
Thursday: Lesson 49: Word problems involving multiplication
Friday: Around the world with multiplication and division facts.
Science:
In science this week we were in the “Explore phase” of unbalanced and balanced forces. During this the troops made observations based on what they know so far on real life examples such as roller coasters, playground equipment, and things in our classroom.
Other News:
MATH FACTS
Please continue to practice multiplication math facts at home.
Next week we will continue to dive deeper into division. If students are not fluent in multiplication, division will be a great struggle for them. This is one of the biggest challenges in this grade is to learn these facts. However, it is essential that they are fluent for many years to come, especially when they move downstairs to middle school.
