Recording yourself requires some equipment. It may be as simple as the laptop or phone that you already own. Or it may be as complex as a home studio setup with dedicated lights, cameras, and a microphone. (Admittedly, for most people, it will be the former.)

No matter how expensive or fancy your tools, you'll get the most out of them with a basic understanding of how they work and how to set them up.

In this section, we'll discuss what you need to prepare your recording environment, your microphone, your camera, and lighting. We'll talk about the situations where it might be worth investing in some additional equipment, and how to make the most of minimal equipment if that's all you have access to.
