We discussed NYU Stream in the Recording section, but its features only begin with video recording. It also allows you to host and share your video with members of the NYU community.
In this section, we'll discuss how to manage your media in NYU Stream and add it to course sites for students to view.
Accessing NYU Stream is easy: just go to stream.nyu.edu and log in with your normal NYU NetID and password.
If you've used Express Capture or Kaltura Capture to record your video, it will already be added to your Stream Media Library. But you can also add pre-existing videos that you've recorded with other software: Learn About Uploading Media.
Video you've added appears in your Media Library, which is accessible in the top-right corner of the Stream Homepage:
You can edit important details about your video either when you initially add it, or anytime later. This includes attributes like a video description, tags, the title, and more. Learn how to edit your video information here.
If you begin to add a lot of media to your Media Library, it may become difficult to find specific material when you need it. Stream has a few features to help you organize your footage.
Tags - Tags allow you to assign labels to your video to aid in search. Tags can be organized in numerous ways: a tag could be a broad subject area like "finance" or the name of a course you're using a video in. A video can have multiple tags. Tags can facilitate open-ended searching.
Channels - Channels allow you to curate specific lists of videos. For example, you may want to create a channel for all the videos you've made for a specific course. Channels can be private or shared openly. Channels can also be made with video from multiple contributors.
To see a video on NYU Stream, a viewer will need an NYU NetID. But you can still exercise some additional control over who can see a video.
Videos can exist in several levels of access:
Private - The video is only visible to its owner and people that have been specifically added as Collaborators
Unlisted - The video is visible to anyone on Stream, but it won't appear in search.
Published - The video is visible to anyone with access to the Channel or Category the video has been published to.
Note: If you want to share your video on Brightspace, you don't need to separately publish it. We'll discuss how to do that in "Adding video to Brightspace" below.
Providing captions for video is an important element of making media accessible for students. NYU Stream has the ability to create automated captions, but these need to be requested when you add a video. Automated captions can be fairly accurate, but they may be less so in the event of poor recording quality. They also often falter over language that's key to instruction: for example, specialist language or mathematical formulas. You may need to correct the captions that come back to ensure they are correct. Learn how to order, edit, and download captions on NYU Stream.
If you already have captions available for your video, such as those created by a 3rd-party service or from a Zoom recording, you can add those on Stream too. Learn how to upload existing captions.
One of NYU Stream's greatest advantages is its significant integration with other NYU services. Brightspace is one of the most significant of these.
When you add an NYU Stream video to your Brightspace course site, it allows you to do some things that are not available in any other video host:
You can share video specifically with different classes and sections without manually editing numerous students or requiring students to sign up for another service.
You can view analytics for your video that include granular user data.
If you have a video on NYU Stream, adding it to your course site is easy. This video describes three methods you can use to add your video to NYU Stream: Sharing your video on NYU Brightspace.
Earlier, we mentioned that video on NYU Stream can't be accessed by people without a NetID. This is generally true, but there is an exception: using an embed code to embed a video within an external site. Embed codes are only available to the owner of the video. Learn how to embed your video on a web page.
You can download media from Stream if you're the owner of that media. This can be useful in a few situations. If you recorded with an NYU Stream tool like Express Capture or Kaltura Capture, you can download the file from Stream to re-upload elsewhere. This can also be a life-saver in the event you lost your original recording. Learn how to download your media.
NYU Stream offers a ton of functionality beyond what we've discussed here, including:
Basic editing features
Video quizzes
Interactive video
Powtoon, an easy-to-use animation program
The ability to add the above features to existing YouTube videos
