Textbook:  Distant Voyages

Novels:  The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, Wonder, Holes

Students will read a variety of short stories from our textbook throughout the school year focusing on reading strategies, vocabulary and comprehension. Beginning in October, students will complete novel studies which will give them opportunities to practice fluency at home and at school as well as writing and comprehension.  Students will read in , we will read a story from the reading series, complete vocabulary and spelling activities and Author Studies.  Each Friday or the last school day of the week, the students will take a weekly reading quiz that assesses the skill of the week.   If a student is absent when we take the assessments, they will be given a paper copy when they return to school to take the weekly assessment.  The activities, worksheets and assessment will be assessed with a point system.  We read the story as a whole group, in partner(s), and listen to the story each week.  This year textbooks will remain in the classroom so students can make-up classwork during 5th grade Study Hall.  We will also practice ELA skills during our 5th Grade Study Halls and students can access this practice curriculum on their Chromebook.

We will also have novel groups throughout the year.   During this time, the students will work in small groups to discuss their chapter book and complete their novel packet.   This school year I will lead students through 3 novels:

The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe:  by C.S. Lewis

Wonder:  by R. J. Palacio

Holes:  by Louis Sachar

I encourage all students to read a novel outside of school each quarter and summarize within their Reading notebook.
