In Summer 1, we will be reading 'The Dinosaur department store' and thinking about what imaginary pet we would like before writing a leaflet all about how to care for it. We will then be writing our own dinosaur adventure stories based on a clip from a movie. Our grammar focus this term will be on adding prefixes and suffixes.
In Summer 2, our topic is Seasides and Pirates. We will be reading the 'Lighthouse Keeper's lunch' stories and writing recipes. We will then move on to a poetry unit looking at the story 'Julian is a Mermaid'. We will then write stories based on the book 'The Night Pirates'.
We follow the Read Write Inc programme of study when teaching phonics. The children are grouped according to their phonic knowledge.
The children will be continuing to revise all sounds this term - Set 2 (ay, ee, igh, ow, oo, oo, ar, or, air, ir, ou, oy) and Set 3 (ea, oi, a-e, i-e, o-e, u-e, aw, are, ur, er, ow, ai, oa, ew, ire, ear, ure).
In June, all children in Year 1 will sit the Government Phonics Screening Check. This will be done 1:1 with the teacher. The children will read 40 words; 20 of these are real words and 20 nonsense words. The result of their test will be sent with the end of year school report.
The children also continue to build their reading fluency and comprehension skills.
We follow the Oxford Owl handwriting programme with daily handwriting sessions. The children should be able to form all lowercase and uppercase letters correctly.
At the beginning of the Summer term, we will develop our multiplication and division skills. The children will learn to count in multiples of twos, fives and tens. Solve one step problems involving multiplication and division, by calculating the answer using concrete objects, pictorial representations and arrays.
We then move on to fractions. The children will learn to recognise, find and name a half as one of two equal parts of an object, shape or quantity. They will recognise, find and name a quarter as one of four equal parts of an object, shape or quantity. They will then compare, describe and solve practical problems for: lengths and heights, mass, capacity and volume. The children will learn to describe position, direction and movement, including whole, half, quarter and three quarter turns.
The children will develop their place value knowledge and skills by learning to count to and across 100, forwards and backwards. Count, read and write numbers to 100 in numerals and identify one more and one less. We will then learn about money and recognise the value of different coins and notes.
Finally, we will focus on time, learning the language relating to dates, days, months and years. The children will also practise telling the time to the hour and half past.
We follow the Come and See Scheme of work. Our topics for this term are:
Holidays and Holy Days
In this topic, we think about holidays as days to be happy. We then explore Pentecost; a holy day – the feast of the Holy Spirit.
Being Sorry
In this topic we learn that we have choice – sometimes we choose well, and sometimes wrongly. We explore that God helps us to choose well and to be sorry. God always forgives us.
Neighbours
In this topic, we think about our neighbours around the world and focus on the work of CAFOD and fairtrade.
