In Spring 1, our topic is Hot and Cold countries. In our class reading sessions, we will read different non-fiction books to learn facts about penguins. We will then write an information page about them. Next, we will move on to read books showing hot parts of the world such as 'Meerkat Mail' and 'Handa's Surprise'.
In Spring 2, our topic is London. We will be reading 'A walk in London' before role playing our own trip to the capital and writing an information leaflet. We will then be learning about the Great Fire of London in History and writing our own diary entries as if we were there at the time.
We follow the Read Write Inc programme of study when teaching phonics. The children are grouped according to their phonic knowledge.
The children will be continuing to revise their set 2 sounds this term (ay, ee, igh, ow, oo, oo, ar, or, air, ir, ou, oy).
By the end of the Spring term the children will also have been taught the set 3 sounds (ea, oi, a-e, i-e, o-e, u-e, aw, are, ur, er, ow, ai, oa, ew, ire, ear, ure).
The children also begin to build their reading fluency and comprehension skills.
We follow the Oxford Owl handwriting programme with daily handwriting sessions. The children should be able to form all lowercase and uppercase letters correctly.
At the beginning of the Spring term we focus on adding and subtracting within 20. We use a variety of objects and manipulatives to help the children understand what they are doing. We use tens frames, part part whole models, numicon, number lines and bar models.
We then move onto building on previous learning on place value now focusing on numbers to 50. We count forwards and backwards within 50, focus on representing numbers within 50 using tens and ones and compare objects and numbers within 50. We also learn how to count in 2s and 5s.
After this we move onto a very practical block of learning. We compare lengths and heights as well as improving our measuring skills. The children are introduced to weight and mass for the first time. We begin by using non-standard units (e.g. cubes, bricks) to measure the mass of an object. The children are also introduced to volume and capacity for the first time. We explore the concept in a practical way, using a variety of containers.
We follow the Come and See Scheme of work. Our topics for this term are:
Special People
In this topic we know and understand that there are special people in our lives who are there to help us. We learn that on Sunday, in church, we meet people who do special jobs as we gather to celebrate the good news of Jesus.
Meals
In this topic we know and understand that families and groups share special meals and that Mass is Jesus' special meal.
Change
In this topic we know and understand that we all change and grow. We learn that Lent is a time to change in preparation for the celebration of Easter.
