In Spring 1 we will be focusing on Art and Design Skills
In the sequence of lessons, children will learn and develop their skills in: design, drawing, craft, painting and art appreciation; undertaking two different printing techniques, using 2D shapes to explore a variety of media, mixing different shades of one colour and discussing the work of artist Louis Wain
In Spring 2 in Design Technology, our topic is Food. Children will handle and explore fruits and vegetables and learn how to identify which category they fall into. They will then undertake taste testing to establish their chosen ingredients for the smoothie they will make and design packaging for.
Spring 1 - Robotics
This term, the children will build on their work from the Autumn term on algorithms to program Dash the robot! We will use the Blockly app to create code for Dash.
Spring 2 - Digital Imagery
Children will use their creativity and imagination to plan a miniature adventure story and capture it using their developing photography skills. They learn to enhance their photos using a range of editing tools as well as searching for and adding other images to their project, resulting in a high-quality photo collage showcase.
Hot and Cold Countries
In this topic the children will explore the similarities and differences between Africa and the Polar regions.
We will begin by using world maps, atlases and globes to identify the United Kingdom and its countries before focusing on the climate and animals of Africa and the South Pole.
During the Spring term we will continue to study the changing seasons focusing on Winter and Spring. We will look at daily weather patterns noticing changes and making predictions.
The Great Fire of London
This is an exciting topic where we will study a significant event which is beyond our living memory.
We will learn about the events that happened over the few days in 1666 and the impact this had on London. We will learn about Samuel Pepys and the importance of his diary which is a main source of evidence.
Spring 1 - Marvellous materials
The children will continue the work on materials from the Autumn term, this time moving on to describing the simple physical properties of a variety of everyday materials. They will compare and group together a variety of everyday materials on the basis of their simple physical properties. A great topic for investigation as we think about which materials would be best for a crash mat for an emperor penguins egg, what material we should use to mend a torn umbrella and the best way to save the frozen penguins!
Seasonal change
During the spring term we will continue to study the changing seasons focusing on Winter and Spring. We will observe and describe weather associated with the seasons and how day length varies.
Spring 2 - What’s growing in our garden?
During this topic, the children will identify and name a variety of common wild and garden plants, including deciduous and evergreen trees. They will then identify and describe the basic structure of a variety of common flowering plants.
Bounceback
Looking on the bright side
In this unit, we will learn how to think positively and to learn from our mistakes. We will also reflect on how we can show gratitude for the good things in our lives.
Relationships
In this unit, we will be developing our social skills. We will be thinking about how we can get to know and along well with others and how to make friends.
RSE - 'Life to the Full'
Personal relationships
In this topic the children will identify special people in their lives and what makes them special. They will investigate how their behavious can affect other people and learn that our behaviour can not only upset other people, but it can hurt God too. They will be given an opportunity to reflect on their own experiences and to give and receive forgiveness.
Keeping Safe
During this unit, children will have the opportunity to recognise safe and unsafe situations in real life and online. Through activities and the story of Smartie the Penguin, children will understand that being safe is not just about physical precautions, they need to feel safe on the inside too. We will discuss the difference between good secrets that are safe to keep, and bad secrets that are unsafe to keep. Finally we will use the PANTS resources from the NSPCC that teaches children:
Privates are private.
Always remember your body belongs to you.
No means no.
Talk about secrets that upset you.
Speak up, someone can help.
