In Autumn 1, our topic is Knights and Castles. We will be reading 'Zog' and 'Zog and the Flying Doctors' by Julia Donaldson. We will be focusing on discussing and retelling the story and how to write write a sentence.
In Autumn 2, our topic is Fairytales. It would be wonderful if the children were already familiar with some of the traditional ones such as Little Red Riding Hood, Jack and the Beanstalk and Goldilocks and the 3 bears.
We will be reading and retelling a range of different Fairy Tales.
We follow the Read Write Inc programme of study when teaching phonics. The children are grouped according to their phonic knowledge.
The children will be continuing to revise their set 1 and 2 sounds this term (ay, ee, igh, ow, oo, oo, ar, or, air, ir, ou, oy).
The children also begin to build their reading fluency and comprehension skills.
We follow the Oxford Owl handwriting programme with daily handwriting sessions. The children should be able to form all lowercase and uppercase letters correctly.
At the start of the Autumn term we focus on Place Value and numbers within 10. Once the children have a secure understanding, we move on to addition and subtraction within 10. We use a variety of objects and manipulatives to help the children develop their mathematical understanding. We use tens frames, part whole models, numicon, number lines and bar models.
We then move on to learning about shape where we will recognise, name and sort 2D and 3D shapes.
We then return to further our understanding of Place Value working with numbers within 20.
Numbots helps develop children's addition and subtraction fluency and we recommend that they go on for just 5 minutes a day 4 times a week. The programme compliments what your child is learning in school and focusses on securing any gaps in their knowledge, before moving them onto the next challenge. This self paced journey improves children’s confidence and means they are fully prepared to tackle each new topic.
Year 1 Mission Week
To celebrate the harvest, we collect food to give to the local food bank.
This year we donated the food to the Wimbledon Dons foodbank.
We love performing our special Harvest Festival Assembly to the school and our families.
We follow the Come and See Scheme of work. Our topics for this term are:
Families
In this topic, we will know and understand the love and care shown in the family and God's love and care for every family.
Belonging
In this topic, we will explore belonging to different groups and know and understand that Baptism is an invitation to belong to God's family.
Waiting
In this topic, we will explore the times that it is necessary to wait and the use of that time. We will know and understand that Advent is a time of waiting to celebrate Jesus' coming at Christmas.
