Graduation Requirement :

Students must take 2 electives from Fine & Performing Arts and/or Practical and Applied Arts (at the 10, 20 or 30-level):

Accounting 10 (ACC10)

Want to run your own business?  Accounting is the language of business!  This class will introduce the complete accounting cycle for a service business (for example:  a music, convenience, hardware, electronic stores, etc.).  Topics will include:  journalizing, posting, preparing financial statements, bank reconciliation statements, and balance sheets.  These topics will help you to organize your financial records and get you started in your first business!  Computerized accounting through the use of EXCEL will be introduced. 

Clothing, Textiles and Fashion 10 (CLO10) ($26.25)

This course is designed for students who want to learn to sew or who already have basic sewing skills. Students will complete a variety of projects which could include: samples, strip quilted pin cushion, apron, sweatshirt/hoodie, as well as other projects that they will choose based on their abilities. Students are responsible for the purchase of supplies for their sewing projects.

Communications Media 10 ($26.25)

You have a creative vision, now how are you going to share it with the world? This beginner-level course will introduce students to the media production process and encourage them to develop skills in a wide variety of special effects, stop motion, interactive media, graphic design, animation, and game deisgn. Students will learn about pre-production and post-production processes, and will be introduced to industry equipment, software, and terminology.


Construction & Carpentry 10 (CAC10) ($52.50)

No experience required. The Construction & Carpentry 10 course provides an introduction to common woodworking tools and techniques in a safe and controlled environment. Students will learn how to use common hand and power tools as they build a series of projects to take home.

Communication Media 10 (CME10) ($26.25)

You have a creative vision, now how are you going to share it with the world? This beginner-level course will introduce students to the media production process and encourage them to develop skills in a wide variety of media technologies including audio, video, animation, special effects, stop motion, interactive media, graphic design, animation, and game design. Students will learn about pre- and post-production processes, and will be introduced to industry equipment, software, and terminology. 

Cook and Stitch (PAA10) ($31.50)

Students will have the opportunity to participate in multiple hands on activities based on foods, sewing and design. This is a great choice for the students who wants to cook, sew and be creative but doesn’t have extra space in their timetable to make multiple classes. Students will have the opportunity to sew a variety of projects and cook many delicious foods while learning how to make healthy choices in their daily lives. Students are responsible for the purchase of supplies for their sewing projects.  

Drafting & Computer-Aided Design 10 (DRC10)

This introductory computer drafting course provides instruction on how to interpret and construct the technical drawings that are used in industrial trades, engineering and architecture. Throughout the course students will learn basic and intermediate drafting skills while creating a variety of drawings using common drawing practices.

Financial Literacy 10 (FLT10) **NEW**

Please note: FLT10 does not satisfy the Practical Applied Arts graduation requirement.

Financial Literacy 10 is the new course required to graduate for students entering grade 10 in 2024.  It is intended to expose you to practical skills that will support you in your journey of success in life during, and after, high school. Managing the financial aspects of life can help one access options for their future including effective decision making for expenses and saving for bigger goals such as owning a home. Other parts of financial literacy include budgeting, borrowing, investing in addition to strategic saving. Also learning how to manage records is an important part of this course that can help people determine and achieve their financial goals.

Food Studies 10 (FOO10) ($36.75)

This course encourages the development of life skills in the area of foods. Possible modules of study include Kitchen Basics, Kitchen Food and Safety, Baking Basics, Food and Health, Grains, Vegetables and Fruits, Salads and Sandwiches, Eggs, Cakes, Snacks, Baking with Yeast and Exploring Careers. Students are also able to earn a Food Safe Certificate which enhances employment opportunities. 

Information Processing 10 (INF10)

This course is an introduction to computer applications skills from a personal use perspective.  Topics include computer security, Office Software (word processing and spreadsheets), Web 2.0 tools (Google Drive, Skydrive, Twitter, Blogging, and Wikis), Adobe CC (Illustrator and Photoshop), and presentation tools (Prezi and Powerpoint). 

Photography 10 (PHO10) ($26.25)

The novice photography student will be introduced to digital photography and the rules of effective composition, learn editing on Adobe photo shop while getting their feet wet in the studio with a Macro assignment. Photo assignments will focus on composing, manipulating, and printing photographs while acquiring the knowledge of photo shop skills such as color correction, layers and transferring images. Students will use their own cell phone to take photos but will be introduced to Studio Digital SLR’s to take Seasonal Professional photographs. Printer materials, studio equipment and computers will be supplied, but students are able to use their own digital cameras if they desire.  Sublimation printmaking will be introduced with design on photo shop and printing on a mug. Students should come equipped with a USB to save their photos during the semester.

Accounting 20 (ACC20)

Accounting 20 continues the process begun in Accounting 10—to manage your business’ financial records.  The businesses we are investigating are merchandising businesses organized as a partnership.  Topics will include:  journalizing, posting, preparing payroll records, tax reports, sales tax, and income statements.  Computerized accounting through the use of EXCEL will be continued.  

Communication Media 20 (CME20) ($26.25)

This course will encourage students to use various industry standard technologies in film production, animation, digital effects, and audio production to create projects that entertain and educate their audiences.  Students who have an interest in computers, film studies, animation, CGI/Digital FX, graphic design, creative writing, performance art and multimedia development should consider this course.  Software focus will vary often including Adobe Creative Cloud (Premiere Pro, After Effects, Illustrator, Animate, Photoshop), Animoto, Blender, and AutoDesk Maya.  

Construction & Carpentry 20 (CAC20) ($78.50)

Construction & Carpentry 20 students explore the fields of construction and cabinetry by participating in hands-on activities. The majority of this class is focused on the construction of a cabinetry assignment. Students will develop a plan and list of materials for their cabinet and then work individually through the process of construction. Skills developed include planning and layout procedures, advanced wood machine and hand power tool operations, cabinet structure and fabrication concepts, assembly processes and finishing options. A base fee is collected to cover the minimal cost of materials required. Additional costs may apply if students alter the design or materials used in the project. 

Drafting & Computer-Aided Design 20 (DRC20)

This course is designed to help students develop skills in architectural drafting. Students will design a residence as they explore common construction practices and drafting standards. This course will be of interest to those who are planning future study in related areas such as engineering, architecture, interior design, or industrial trades. 

Information Processing 20 (INF20)

Database design and use will be introduced with MS Access, MySQL, and online shopping websites. Other topics include ergonomics, internet ethics and responsibility (digital citizenship), intermediate spreadsheets, and an introduction to desktop publishing with Adobe InDesign. Students will have a choice of desktop software or web based tools to complete assignments. The software used will be Microsoft Office 365 and Adobe Creative Cloud. 

Life Transitions 20 (LTR20)

Life Transitions 20 is a course designed to help students deal with major changes encountered in their personal lives, their relationships, their community, and their careers. Today it is essential that young period are able to cope effectively with change. Some of the topics covered are self-esteem, communications, personal relationships, time management, community issues and career planning. 

Photography 20 (PHO20) ($26.25)

Photography 20 will continue to build and explore the art of creating quality digital compositions through creative assignments in and out of the studio setting. Advanced techniques will be explored in Photo Shop for studio assignments such as water drop and water reflection photography, still life, advertising campaigns and model/studio lighting shoots. Photo shop assignments will continue strengthening the student’s ability to transform their assignments into visual masterpieces! Students will continue exploring advanced technical settings on SLR cameras and using macro and various lenses to get professional looking work. Photographers are welcome to use their own Digital SLR cameras for the semester! Students will continue to play with designs for sublimation printmaking with photo shop to print their design on a drawstring sports bag. Students should come equipped with a USB to save their visuals during the semester.

Accounting 30 (ACC30)

This is an advanced accounting course focusing on managerial accounting.  This course will continue your progress in operating your own business’ financial records and help you to make informed decisions about your business.  Topics include:  manufacturing/labour costs, contribution margin income statements, cost-volume profit analysis, budgeting, and personal income tax preparation.  Computerized accounting through the use of EXCEL will be continued.

This is an advanced class. Students will study fashion design from the idea stage to production, make a variety of clothing projects utilizing higher level sewing skills and study how clothing is merchandised in the society. Projects will be chosen based on previous sewing experience. A sample portfolio will also be developed. Students are responsible for the purchase of supplies for their sewing projects. 

Communication Media 30 (CME 30) ($26.25)

This course encourages students to refine and expand their understanding of how technology can be used to create compelling audio-visual products.  This course delves further into the production process and introduces some intermediate and advanced techniques in filmmaking, digital special effects, interactive media, and other multimedia production techniques.  This course culminates with a major multimedia project of the student’s choosing which will require a minimum of 60 to 70 hours of time. 

Construction & Carpentry 30 (CAC30) ($52.50)

The Construction & Carpentry 30 course allows students to select individual woodworking projects suitable to their abilities, through which to expand, develop, and refine their skills.  A high level of craftsmanship is the goal for all students. Fees are based on the material cost of the individual project chosen. 

Drafting & Computer-Aided Design 30 (DRC30)

The Drafting 30 course provides students with advanced instruction in 2-D and 3-D drafting. Participants will use AutoCAD and Inventor to produce a series of drawings using common standards and techniques. This course will be of interest to those who are planning future study in related areas such as engineering, industrial trades, or drafting. 

Financial Literacy 30 (FLT30)

This course focuses on seven areas of money management in everyday life: earning, saving, spending, borrowing, sharing, investing and protecting. This is an introduction to financial issues and decisions based around the value of money, importance of financial decision making, budgeting fundamentals, the concept of interest and many others! The purpose of this course is to develop informed individuals with the habits, attitudes, and critical thinking skills necessary to approach financial decisions with competence and confidence—both now an in their future. 

Food Studies 30 (FOO30) ($47.25)

This course is intended to teach students to plan, prepare and serve a variety of dishes but demands a higher level of expertise and student responsibility. Possible modules of study include Food Preservation, Soups, Protein, Science of Nutrition, Canadian Food Mosaic, Food Additives, Creative Baking and International Cuisine. Students are also able to earn a Food Safe Certificate which enhances employment opportunities. 


Information Processing 30 (INF30)

This is a course in which the student will have a choice of topics to explore.  The course begins with a Photoshop tutorial.  Other topics may include:  Web Page Design (Adobe Dreamweaver), vector graphics (Adobe Illustrator), macros (Visual Basic for Applications), and desktop publishing (Adobe Indesign).  Power user feature of Microsoft Office can also be explored.  Web 2.0 tools are also reviewed. 

Interior Design and Decoration 30 (INT30) ($31.50)

This course is for the student who is interested in the creative elements of design and home interiors.  Students will assess and evaluate house alternatives and floor plans.  Areas of study will include but aren’t limited to furniture, lighting, use of colour, and design presentation.  Discussion of interior design techniques and field trips will be part of this class. 

Life Transitions 30 (LTR30)

Life Transition 30 is a course concerned with the major changes encountered throughout life in health care, in the family, and in the workplace. It is founded on the belief that individuals are better prepared to cope if they have the opportunity to discuss and predict the likely consequences of change and can formulate strategies to adapt to change. Some of the topics covered will be the health care system, conflicts in relationships, reproductive health, parenting, money management, independent living, and career planning. 

Photography 30 (PHO30) ($26.25)

This course is a studio-based program in which the senior photo student will have some creative independence while also completing projects set by the teacher. Students will be required to take photographs with digital SLRs in the school studio as well as take cameras home with them to complete landscape crystal ball photos, architecture and to complete an independent A-Z professional studio term project. In partnership with the instructor and their peers, students will develop some of their own independent projects while they are tapping into their areas of interest, learning Advanced Photo Shop applications and Studio Lighting Techniques while creating a workable portfolio. Sublimation printmaking will be continued with print design of a t-shirt on Adobe photo shop. Ongoing consultation and critique with the class will be continuous during the semester. If students would like to use their own Digital Cameras for class that would be great! Students should be equipped with a USB to save their work during the semester.
