Have you ever thought about how much fun it would be to go sailing? Have you considered how relaxing it would feel out on the water, with a gentle breeze pushing your boat along?
Sailing is one of the oldest modes of transportation. As a matter of fact, there is evidence that people have been sailing for over 7,000 years! Sailboats come in all shapes and sizes and often have beautiful sails.
For this art project, you are going to create a sailboat painting, focusing on the elements of art and what you know about boats in general. You will be asked to focus on color, shape and line as you go about this project. You will also learn a few watercolor techniques! Additionally, you will be asked to use what you have learned about boats to be sure that your painting is accurate and detailed. For example, you have to consider the buoyancy. If the body of the boat is tiny and the sail is huge, do you think it would float? Do you think it would tip over? If the body of the boat is huge and the sail is tiny, would the wind be able to move the boat? As you design your boat, try to design a boat that would actually float.
Steps:
Watch the Video Lesson.
Start off by looking at several images of sailboats, think about the boat you have created, and decide what kind of sailboat you want to design.
Next, gather up your supplies and begin your draft in pencil.
Be sure to add a horizon line, this is where the sky and water meet.
Next, use your warm colors to paint in the sky and your cool colors to paint in the water.
Then, you can go about designing the boat any way you like. Follow along with the video to get the general shapes of the boat and the sail, then go ahead and add details of your own. You can add additional boats, a rudder, an island...anything your heart desires.
