Deserted Island - Wants and Needs
Imagine that you are about to visit a deserted island for a week. Next, imagine that you are going to take a boat and row out to the island and you can only take eight things with you.
You must take everything you would need to survive, and the rest of the things you pack can be things you want. Before you go packing up your video games, remember that there won’t be any electricity on the deserted island, so you will have to get creative!
For this art project, you are going to draw yourself, on your deserted island first. Then, you are going to add in all of the things you brought with you when you started your adventure.
Steps:
Check out the Video Lesson.
Make a list of the 8 things you are going to bring to the island. Be sure to include ALL of your needs and then the rest of the things you want.
Draw the island, with you on it. Be sure to pay attention to the horizon line, where the sky meets the water, think about adding some palm trees and maybe the boat you came on. You can show space (make your work look 3D) by overlapping the trees and making things further away seem smaller with less detail. Color your work using crayons, markers or watercolor paint.
Next, begin drawing on the wants and needs. If you find the drawing too challenging, you are welcome to cut out pictures from magazines or print out images and glue them to your island to create a collage.
Show your artwork to your friends and family. Explain the difference in the wants and needs, answer their questions and listen to their feedback on your work.
Finally, think about your Artist’s Statement. You can either write it or say it to someone, but be sure to include how you created your art, why you made the artistic choices you made, one thing you love about it and one thing you’d like to change.
