Producers and consumers, goods and services, these are all important things that make our day to day life possible. Think about it, have you used any goods today? Have you used any services? Maybe you made a trip to the barber shop and stopped for a slush on your way home? If so, you are part of the big picture and you use both goods and services.
For this art project you are going to be creating a goods and services cityscape. A cityscape is an artistic representation of a city or an urban area. There are many well known artists who have created cityscapes, one of the most well known and a student favorite is an artist named James Rizzi. He makes fun, colorful cityscapes and even adds some personality to his buildings. This painting to the right is called “Shortcut”, it was painted in 1989 and is a great example of Rizzi’s colorful cityscapes.
As you design your cityscapes, think of the goods and services that would be available in your imaginary city. Try to build in an equal number of goods and services and to provide things a person would both want and need.
Steps:
Watch the Video Lesson.
Make a list of the goods and services you would like to put in your city.
Gather up your supplies. You can do a paper and pencil drawing or use paint and markers to bring your city alive, the choice is yours.
Start by focusing on the shapes of the buildings. Draw the buildings in the foreground (front) first. The, draw the buildings in the background. Add different shapes to the tops of the buildings.
Label the buildings with signs so that the imaginary people who live in your city will know where to locate the goods and services.
Add details that will make your city come alive. For example add plants, windows, street signs, fire hydrants, cross walks, etc. The sky is the limit, just tune in to your imagination.
When you are finished, show your cityscape to a friend or a family member. Point out the goods and services, explain what goods and services are and ask for feedback on your piece.
