This month we explored plant propagation by taking cuttings from the plants in our centre. Using their fine motor skills, we carefully handled and prepared each cutting, strengthening hand coordination and control. During the activity, we had meaningful discussions about what plants need to grow, including sunlight, water, and soil, supporting their understanding of basic science concepts.
Each cutting was then placed into soil, gently watered, and set under our grow light to ensure it receives enough light to thrive. This hands-on experience encourages responsibility and patience as they take part in caring for living things. We are excited to observe the changes over time and watch our plants grow bigger, deepening the children’s connection to nature and their understanding of the plant life cycle.
During our outdoor exploration, we got the opportunity to enjoy sled rides together in the fresh winter snow. They eagerly took turns riding on the sled while others practiced pulling their friends through the snow. This activity encouraged cooperation and teamwork as the children communicated with one another, negotiated turns, and supported each other during play.
Pulling the sleds helps strengthen the children’s gross motor skills and coordination as they work to move the sled across the snowy ground. Riding on the sled offered a fun sensory experience while building balance and body awareness. Through this shared outdoor activity, the children developed social connections, practiced patience while waiting for their turn, and experienced the joy of active winter play.
The children have been actively involved in preparing snacks, taking part in meaningful, hands-on learning experiences. They practiced peeling potatoes and cutting a variety of fruits and vegetables, developing their fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination. Through these activities, the children are building important life skills, learning about kitchen safety, and gaining confidence in using tools appropriately. This experience also encourages independence, responsibility, and an appreciation for healthy food choices.
Recently Smiles Plus came for a visit. Danilelle Check the children's teeth and applied a protective coating called fluoride to the participating children's teeth. Danielle is a licensed Dental Hygienist with the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority. The children receive a tooth brush and a sticker after their visit.
