Nursery / Kinder
The Nursery Kindergarten group planted tomato and sweet pepper seeds, beginning an exciting hands-on learning experience in gardening. We will all take part in regularly checking and watering their seeds, observing changes over time as they grow. Through this process, they are developing an understanding of what plants need to thrive, such as water, sunlight, and care.
As the seedlings mature, we hope to transplant them into our community garden after the first frost. This activity encourages responsibility, patience, and a connection to nature, while also supporting the development of early science concepts and nurturing skills.
Cellophane and Tubes
Using our creativity and curiosity, exploration of cardboard tubes opened our minds to many different uses. We began by making telescopes with pieces of coloured cellophane placed over the ends. As we all looked through the tubes, the children experimented with different combinations of colours, noticing how layering the cellophane created new colours and changed the way things appeared. This simple exploration introduced early concepts of colour mixing and light while encouraging observation and curiosity.
Longer tubes were then added to the play space and quickly became tunnels and ramps. We used them to create pathways for Hot Wheels cars, experimenting with how the cars moved through the tubes. They tested different angles and positions, discovering how gravity and slope affected how fast the cars travelled. This type of open-ended exploration supported early problem-solving skills, cooperation, and creative thinking.
One of the larger collaborative projects was building a cardboard robot. The children painted the cardboard pieces and added coloured cellophane to cut-out sections. When light shone through the robot, the children noticed the colourful reflections created by the cellophane. This project continued over several days as the children added details and discussed ideas together. They even decided to give the robot a name, choosing Robo Ona, and proudly declared that their robot is a girl.
Earth Day activities
This morning, a child planted cat grass seeds for us to observe and care for as they grow. During the activity, we discussed what plants need to thrive, including sunlight, soil, air, and water. This hands-on experience supported the children’s understanding of plant growth and encouraged responsibility as they help care for the seeds over time.
For Earth Day afternoon, we took a walk to Alfred Park to enjoy the outdoors and connect with nature. The children participated in a fun scavenger hunt, searching for items like sticks, bugs, and even a heart-shaped rock. It was a joyful experience filled with exploration, discovery, and lots of fun.
