Having Fun outside!
2026 began with a bang as we wrapped up the final day of winter break with a series of fun and energetic Minute to Win It challenges. These activities encouraged the Bears to test their hand-eye coordination, problem-solving, and movement skills, all while working under the exciting pressure of a timer. It was a joyful and high-energy way to transition back into routine.
Once school resumed, the Bears quickly settled back into familiar rhythms and returned to their clubs. Building on work from December, many children continued developing their sewing projects, strengthening fine motor skills and perseverance.
Several days a week, the group also proudly donned their chef hats to assist in preparing soups for our winter soup supplement program, taking an active role in helping nourish our bodies and independence.
Thanks to unseasonably warm weather early in the month, we were able to enjoy plenty of outdoor snow play. The Bears continued collaborating on snow fort construction, using tools such as snow saws and shovels to explore engineering and teamwork. Art was also brought outdoors as children repurposed dried-out markers to colour the snow, blending creativity with sensory exploration.
As temperatures dropped, our focus shifted indoors. The Bears engaged in popsicle stick building projects that encouraged planning, design, and problem-solving. We also made good use of the gym space with dancing and movement-based games to keep bodies active and spirits high during the colder days.
Throughout the month, the group has taken on increased responsibility within the centre. Children helped organize play spaces, wipe down tables, assist with laundry, and complete other daily tasks to earn Splash Cash in preparation for the cash-out day on January 26. These opportunities support independence, teamwork, and a respect for our environment.
Creative expression continues to be a meaningful part of the Bears’ days. Using loose materials and open-ended time, children have been busy creating miniature books, cardboard computers for dramatic play, paper “squishies,” mystery blind bags, and intricate Lego structures and vehicles. Providing the freedom and resources for creativity allows these ideas to grow and flourish.
Our older Bears consistently show care and leadership toward the younger Cubs, often stepping in to help them learn and grow. This month, we introduced a counting Pop-It race game that encouraged cooperative play across ages. Games like Uno also offered opportunities to support number and colour recognition—while still enjoying the thrill of sneaking in a well-timed “pick up four!” We are excited to continue nurturing these connections, especially with upcoming shared reading opportunities during I Love to Read Month. If any parents or family members are interested in visiting to read with our groups, we would be delighted to welcome you.
We ended January with a heartfelt farewell to Rhea, alongside an engaging introduction to Scottish culture and poetry writing in recognition of Robbie Burns Day.
Looking ahead, February is shaping up to be a busy and exciting month. We will be celebrating I Love to Read Month, Black History Month, Festival du Voyageur, and Lunar New Year through a variety of meaningful and engaging activities.
We hope everyone has stayed warm and healthy throughout the month and shares our excitement for all the learning and fun planned ahead.
Ready for February!
