BEARS
February was a dynamic and enriching month for the Bears, filled with meaningful learning experiences, cultural celebrations, and strong community connections. To begin, we would like to extend our sincere appreciation to the many special guests who joined us for I Love to Read Month. A heartfelt thank you to Leigh from Fire Hall #6, Trevor and Chris from the police station, Alexis from SCO, Adrian from the Nature Forest Alliance, Bernadette Smith, Michael Redhead Champagne, and the many additional friends, family members, and community partners who generously shared their time and stories with us. Your presence not only strengthened our connection to the community but also inspired a continued love of literacy among the children. Opportunities such as these help demonstrate the importance of reading in all areas of life and highlight the diverse roles literacy plays in our broader world.
Throughout February, we also recognized Black History Month by introducing the children to influential individuals who have made lasting contributions to society. We learned about Martin Luther King Jr. and his role in promoting unity, equality, and peaceful change. The children explored the achievements of Garrett Morgan, particularly his invention of the traffic light, and discussed how innovation can positively impact everyday life. We also studied the vibrant artwork of Alma Thomas, using her distinctive style as inspiration for our own creative explorations. These conversations supported both cultural awareness and an appreciation for perseverance, creativity, and leadership.
Activity for Frendship Day
As Friendship Day approached, we shifted our focus toward themes of kindness, connection, and inclusion. The Bears prepared personalized bags for collecting friendship cards and participated in a variety of heart-themed crafts. The children also enjoyed crafting friendship bracelets, reinforcing fine motor skills while celebrating the value of meaningful relationships. A highlight was the collaborative creation of a sensory heart table, designed and built by the children themselves, showcasing teamwork, creativity, and pride in their shared accomplishments.
Our cultural explorations continued as we celebrated Lunar New Year, learning about the traditions and customs associated with this important holiday. The children created lucky lanterns and enjoyed tasting sticky rice cakes and dumplings while discussing the significance of family, renewal, and good fortune that mark the celebration.
Lunar New Year Activity
We then embraced the spirit of Festival du Voyageur, exploring aspects of Métis culture and heritage. The Bears sampled beaver tails and tourtière tarts and participated in hands-on learning experiences such as making maple syrup pops and trying finger weaving. These activities provided valuable opportunities to learn about local history and cultural traditions in an engaging and memorable way.
Overall, February was a vibrant and exciting month filled with diverse experiences that supported literacy, cultural awareness, creativity, and social-emotional development. Looking ahead to March, we will be focusing on Nutrition Month, with continued opportunities for children to actively participate in our Cooking Club.
Through hands-on food preparation and discussion, we will explore healthy choices and the importance of balanced nutrition. We are also eagerly anticipating the arrival of spring and a fun-filled Spring Break at the end of the month.
Thank you for your continued support — we look forward to another engaging month with the Bears!
