RECEPTION LOCATION

Mirror Lab

How often are we given the space to create with the freedom we were once granted as a child? The freedom of creating with whatever materials you have at your disposal and pulling from your most carefree internal world, one where your whole self shines through without holding back. This type of imaginative and playful energy is something that I cherish so deeply within my own practice and has guided me to some very exciting methods of creating. In this space I encourage you to explore the materials and mediums that call to you. We will have access to drawing, painting, and sculptural materials and I look forward to supporting you all in bringing new work to life. I believe that experimentation leads to the discovery of the worlds we dream of! This J-Term project will round off with an exhibition at Mirror Lab.

Maiya Lea Hartman is a self-taught multi-disciplinary artist and muralist based in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Their practice examines traditions within the African Diaspora and utilizes various mediums such as drawing, painting, ceramics, and mixed media. They are interested in allowing their work to be a channel for Black people to experience familiarity, comfort, and nostalgia. Through familial and self-portraiture, they focus on themes of love and connectivity with personal and collective memory, the ancestors, and the self. Hartman was a 2021 Artist in Residence with the Minnesota African American Heritage Museum and gallery and a 2022 Next Step Fund recipient. Maiya is a current Artist in Residence at the ALVERA apartments in St.Paul Minnesota. In addition to their studio practice, Maiya has been working as a lead artist and collaborator with the mural collective Creatives After Curfew. They currently hold a studio space in PF Studios #285 at the Northrup King building where they co-facilitate a critique program called the Conversation Lab for artists in the program.
