Service Design

In Sparta Township Public Schools, students are provided with supports and interventions along a continuum. The information below outlines the design of services provided at each tier of our multi-level prevention system.

Tier 1

Academic

Who: All K-8 students in the Sparta Township School District receive Tier 1 core instruction.

What: Tier 1 involves the implementation of high quality instruction within the general education classroom.

Where: Tier 1 level of instruction can be delivered through:

  • Small-group instruction

  • Whole-class instruction

  • One-to-one conferring

  • Designated academic assistance programs, such as Focused Instruction for All (FIFA) in Grades 4-5 and Academic Assistance in Grades 6-8

Behavior

Who: All K-8 students in the Sparta Township School District receive Tier 1 social and emotional support.

What:

    • In Grades K-5, whole-class social-emotional competencies are taught using the Choose Love program materials in addition to the monthly character traits.

    • In Grades 6-8, a weekly 22 minute period is devoted to Social Emotional Learning using the Eduguide program.

    • Where: Tier 1 level of support can be administered in the general education classroom by the classroom teacher or guidance counselor.

Tier 2

Academic

Who: K-8 students who are not making adequate progress within Tier 1 are provided with targeted intervention and support (Tier 2)

What: Tier 2 interventions and supports are supplemental, small-group instruction provided in addition to core instruction (Tier 1).

Where: Small- group instruction/intervention may be provided in either the general education classroom or during an intervention period by the general education teacher or an instructional intervention teacher.

How: In Sparta Township Public Schools, a staff member may complete and submit a referral to Student Support Services after notifying parents/guardians of the intent to request support services. The Student Support Building Team will meet to review and create an individualized Student Support Plan.

    • Frequency and duration of the interventions are determined by the individual needs of the student, but will typically occur 1-3 days/per week for approximately 35 to 50 minutes.

    • Progress is typically monitored regularly throughout a 6-8 week period and frequency is determined by the individual needs of the student as outlined in the student support plan.

Behavior

Who: K-8 students who need more targeted support to meet their social emotional needs.

What:

    • Tier 2 supports are provided in addition to Tier 1 supports. Tier 2 supports occur within small groups, such as lunch bunches or social skills groups with peers and are facilitated by guidance counselors or other counseling staff as deemed appropriate.

    • In Grades K-5, character education mini lessons are provided through the Second Step Program.

Where: Lunch bunch, social skills and group sessions are provided outside of the general education classroom.

How: In Sparta Township Public Schools, a staff member may complete and submit a referral to Student Support Services. The Student Support Building Team will meet to review and create an individualized Student Support Plan.

    • Frequency and duration of the interventions are determined by the individual needs of the student, but will typically occur 1-3 days/per week for approximately 15 to 35 minutes or 35 to 50 minutes.

    • Progress is typically monitored regularly throughout a 6-8 week period and frequency is determined by the individual needs of the student as outlined in the student support plan.

Tier 3

Academic

Who: K-8 students who have not made adequate progress within Tier 2 and/or who demonstrate the need of intensive individualized intervention

What: Within Tier 3, students receive intensive and individualized intervention and support. Tier 3 intervention and support is provided in addition to Tier 1 and Tier 2.

    • In Grades K-5 this may also include participating in an ELA or Math extended learning program.

Where: Tier 3 interventions and supports are provided to the individual student in or outside of the general education classroom after the delivery of core instruction.

How: In Sparta Township Public Schools, a staff member may complete and submit a referral to Student Support Services after notifying parents/guardians of the intent to request support services. The Student Support Building Team will meet to review and create an individualized Student Support Plan.

    • Frequency and duration of the interventions are determined by the individual needs of the student, but will typically occur 3-5 days/per week for approximately 35 to 50 minutes.

    • Progress is typically monitored frequently throughout a 6-8 week period and frequency is determined by the individual needs of the student.There may be adaptations of supports and interventions based on the individual students' performance using data that is reviewed during frequent progress monitoring intervals.

Behavior

Who: K-8 students who have not made adequate progress within Tier 2 support or whose behavior/social-emotional needs created barriers to learning and/or social settings

What: Within Tier 3, students receive individual check-ins and counseling sessions with the building Guidance Counselor or identified counseling staff member. Tier 3 support is provided in addition to Tier 1 and Tier 2 supports.

    • In Grades 6-8, students may also receive individualized support through the Effective School Solutions Program based on a program referral and eligibility process.

Where: Tier 3 support typically occurs within the building but may also be provided in other district special services programs such as the Align Wellness Program at Sparta High School and outside of the school district in partnership with other agencies.
