Data-Based Decision Making

Data-Based Decision Making

A systematic, comprehensive, data-based decision making process is a key component of our RTI program. Screening and benchmark assessments, progress monitoring data, and other sources of data are used to identify students who may need additional support and to determine if a student has or has not responded to the interventions and supports at any level of the prevention system.

According to RTI Success, there are decisions that are made relative to student performance that are considered by our Student Support Services Building Team members. Some examples of questions used in the decision making process include:

Instruction

  • How effective is the instruction? What instructional changes need to be made?

Evaluating Effectiveness

  • How effective is the core curriculum or materials used?

Movement within the Multi-Level Prevention System

  • How well is the student responding to the tiered intervention and supports?

Disability Identification

  • If a student fails to respond to intensive intervention, should they be referred for further evaluation?

Data Review & Sources

In Sparta Township Public Schools, data is reviewed by the Student Support Services Team in each building. The team uses a data-driven approach for supporting students that focuses on monitoring and providing targeted supports along a continuum using an individualized student support plan. The team reviews data from both formative and summative assessments upon receiving a student referral and utilizes progress monitoring data during monthly meetings to compare and contrast the effectiveness of the academic and/or behavioral interventions and supports in meeting the goal outlined in the student support plan.
