Overview of the Instructional Intervention Program

The core belief of the Sparta Township Public Schools Student Support Services Department is that all students have the right to a comprehensive education that meets their individual needs. With that philosophy in mind, our district Instructional Intervention (II) Program uses the Response to Intervention (RTI) model to identify and support students who may experience barriers to learning or require enrichment for learning. According to the RTI Action Network, the RTI framework is a multi-tier approach to the early identification and support of students with learning and behavior needs.

Goal of the Instructional Intervention Program

The goal of the Instructional Intervention Program is to close instructional gaps, make content accessible, strengthen skills, implement targeted supports and build confidence so that students are able to make adequate progress, master grade level standards and achieve academic success.

Components of the Instructional Intervention Program

The RTI approach begins in the general education classroom setting with the classroom teacher using research-based high-quality core instructional and screening practices. Students not meeting grade-level expectations and identified as needing support are then provided with interventions that increase as needed to facilitate progress towards learning and/or behavior goals.

Interventions or support may take place within the classroom with the general education teacher or outside of the classroom with an Instructional Intervention (II) teacher or specialized teacher, depending on the level of intervention/support that is necessary. Multiple data points collected at regular intervals drive the specific interventions and instructional decisions for individual students.
