Project Descriptions
Penrose Triangles: known as the "Impossible Triangle." Students learned how to draw the optical illusion and strengthened their shading skills.
Shattered Drawings: Students chose a cartoon character to re-draw by hand (observational drawing). They divided their drawings and background for a "shattered glass" look. Each of the shattered fragments has shading techniques that change in different directions.
Tim Burton Inspired Self-Portraits: Students learned about movie director, producer, and artist Tim Burton. Artists drew self-portraits in Burton's gothic style, which predominately features exaggerated facial expressions, faint or light skin with darkened eyes and shadows.
Radial Name Designs: Students reviewed different color schemes, or "color families." We discussed that radial designs start in the center and works its way out to the outer edge, often moving in a circular motion. Artists designed their names with different font choices and every other section their name was flipped in reverse. Students used marker, colored pencil, and sharpie for color and details.
Perspective Words: Artists practiced creating boxes in 1-point linear perspective in the three points of view: worm's eye, eye level, and bird's eye. After, students chose a word (or their name or pet's name) to create in perspective. The perspective effect gives the illusion that their names/words are 3D and popping off of the paper.
