Project Descriptions
Insect Drawings: this lesson connects to 3rd grade science and insect anatomy. 3rd grade artists reviewed the three main body parts of an insect: head, thorax, and abdomen. Students chose to recreate drawing an insect that met those anatomy criteria or could mix and match insect parts for a unique drawing. Artists used colored pencil techniques for the insects and color diffusing paper for the background.
Vincent Van Gogh Inspired Sunflowers: 3rd graders learned about the life of Post-Impressionist artist Vincent van Gogh. Students created their own sunflower (or other flower) drawings. Students drew with black Sharpie markers and if they made a mistake, they had to come up with a creative solution to "make it work." Artists used crayons and oil pastel techniques for the flowers, vase, and table, and watercolors for a wax-resist background.
Present Bow Drawings (Mr. Seidel and Mrs. Middaugh only): before the holidays, 3rd graders were strengthening their abilities to apply shading and value techniques to their drawings. Students were given a pre-drawn bow template and learned how to shade with colored pencils and oil pastels. 3rd grade artists selected their best ones to use for a trompe l'oeil (a realistic, 3D looking drawing) collage with construction paper for the present
Paint Tube Sculptures: students learned about form, 3D, and sculpture to create their own paint tube sculptures. We used toilet paper tubes, rigid plaster wrap, paint, and Crayola modeling clay for the "paint" to look like it is being squeezed from the tube.
Shapes (with line, shading, and gradients): we reviewed shape vs. form and traced several overlapping shapes on drawing paper. Inside the shapes, students continued to develop their shading and gradient skills using colored pencils and crayons. Students created "echoing" lines around the shapes using sharpie marker.
