Project Descriptions
2nd grade artists selected their artwork for display.
Rhythm Drawings: 2nd graders discussed the difference between rhythm in art and music. Artists created their own rhythm or movement by repeating shapes to show fast or slow movement. Students used warm colors inside the shapes and cool colors in the background.
Silhouettes: 2nd graders reviewed from 1st grade that silhouettes are solid "black" objects because the sunlight is behind it. We used color diffusing paper to make a sky. We used black sharpie or paint or construction paper to make a silhouette of a haunted house OR a window with different critters and objects in the window panes.
Hibernating Animal Paper Weavings: 2nd graders learned how to create a loom with black construction paper. We learned how to weave with paper strips using specific color schemes: primary, secondary, warm, or cool colors. Artists created drawings/paintings of an animal that hibernates. The paper weaving is meant to look like a quilt or blanket for the hibernating animal.
Sunflower or Sunshine Weavings: 2nd graders reviewed what weaving is. Students painted paper plates with different shades of orange and yellow for a sunflower or bright yellow sunshine. Artists learned how to weave in a circular motion. After, students added a leaf or cloud behind their weavings.
Shapes with Continuous Line and Color: We reviewed different types of line (straight, curly, rainbow, dashed, and more) as well as the directions of those lines. We also reviewed different geometric shapes and different color families, such as: primary, secondary, warm, and cool colors. Students drew a continuous line with sharpie and traced 2-3 shapes on their papers. We used the different color schemes only inside the shapes and used crayons for shading to make our shapes appear 3D.
