Project Descriptions
1st Grade Artists selected their artwork for display.
Fishbowl Collages: 1st graders learned about the different types of lines, shapes, and pattern. Students used crayons to draw their fish inside their fishbowls and blue watercolor paints for the water. After, students used scrapbook and construction paper for the decorative elements like the sand and seaweed.
Pumpkin Landscapes: 1st graders learned that landscapes are views of nature. Students learned how to create a horizon line and vanishing point and created pumpkins that change in size to show space. Artists used crayons for the clouds, fields, and pumpkins, and watercolors for a sunset sky.
Pattern Owls: 1st graders learned facts about owls. Students drew their own owlets (baby owls) and added different lines and shapes to make patterns inside the belly. Artists used watercolors to paint inside the owls. For the background, students used construction paper to make the tree, leaves, and fluffy feathers.
Mittens: 1st graders watched the animated version of the book The Mitten. 1st graders learned how to draw the shape of a mitten and applied patterns throughout the mitten. Artists used crayons and watercolors inside the mitten and glued them on to black construction paper with glitter snowflakes.
Hot Chocolate Mugs: 1st graders learned how to draw a mug that looks realistic and three-dimensional.
Chris Uphues' Hearts: 1st graders learned about contemporary artist Chris Uphues. Uphues is a street artist who travels around the United States painting murals. Chris and his wife created the Beautiful Days foundation to spread happiness and love in communities. Uphues is known for his colorful cartoon-style artwork, with many of his paintings using hearts. We painted paper and created hearts in the style of Uphues.
Word Art: 1st graders read from a list of sight words, spelling words, and positive words. Students chose a word and learned how to fold their papers into sections. Each folded section of the paper was one letter of the word. Students used tempera paint sticks, crayons, and oil pastels for their designs and colors.
Berthe Morisot Inspired Flowers: 1st graders learned about the French Impressionist artist Berthe Morisot. Morisot painted in the Impressionist style with quick brush strokes with the use of light and color. We painted flower vases in the style of Morisot.
