Malik Amber the able general of Ahmadnagar made it difficult for the Mughals to consolidate their power in the Deccan. Khurram , Jahangir's third son brought about the submission of Ahmadnagar. For this he was given the title of Shah Jahan or ' lord of the world'. He also captured Kangra Fort. Khurram, however, lost Kandahar to the Persians in AD 1622. It was a great loss to the empire , and despite his best efforts to regain in it, he was unable to do so . Kandahar had been annexed by Akbar and had remained with Mughals throughout his reign. It was strategically and commercially important.
The reign of Jahangir was notable for other reasons. It saw the coming of English to India . In 1608 AD , Captain W Hawkins arrived at the court of Jahangir with the letter from King James I of England asking for some concessions for the East India Company. This later led to the establishment of English factories at Bharuch and Surat. Seven years later, in AD 1615, Sir Thomas Roe came as an ambassador and was able to get some trading rights for East India Company . The East India Company laid the foundation of British rule in India.Thomas Roe left behind an interesting account of life at the Mughal court.
