Below are frequently asked questions we get about Project SOAR. We hope our responses are helpful, but if you have a different question or still need to get in touch with someone from Project SOAR, please email your question to soarla@socalcan.org.
You must currently live in one of HACLA's fourteen public housing communities. We are not able to provide services to HACLA Section 8 residents at this time.
Complete our Project SOAR Program Sign Up Form and a SOAR team member will be in touch with you in 2-3 business days.
Our Education Navigators provide 1-on-1 guidance and can help with:
Exploring your postsecondary options (vocational/tech schools, community colleges, 4-year colleges/universities, and certification programs)
Applying for college, financial aid, and scholarships
Building an academic plan
Writing college essays and personal statements
Navigating your school portal
Staying on track to graduate
Advocating on your behalf with admissions, financial aid, or professors
Researching and applying for internships and jobs
Providing career support with resume building, job searching, and interviewing
No, you do not. Project SOAR’s services are open to all HACLA public housing residents who are interested in pursuing a degree, certificate, or specialized training, regardless of their current age or educational level.
We are physically based and offer in-person support at 8 HACLA public housing communities in East and South Los Angeles.

No, you do not have to pay to participate in Project SOAR. Our services and programs are FREE of charge to all eligible HACLA public housing residents.
Our Educational Navigators are available to meet with residents virtually Mondays through Thursdays from 9am to 5pm.
You can schedule a virtual appointment by contacting the Education Navigator based at or near your housing community.
There is no requirement for you to be in the program for a certain number of months or years. We understand that your personal and academic journey might change and we try to meet you where you are.
You can drop in or schedule an appointment whenever you need the additional support. Once a resident joins the program, they are a Project SOAR student for life!
Yes, you can continue receiving services even if you move out of HACLA public housing or start college, as long as you were enrolled in the program while living in HACLA public housing.
Once you're a SOAR student, you're a SOAR student for life! We are committed to providing the support, resources, and guidance you need throughout college to help you successfully graduate or complete your program.
Yes! We also offer 2 programs during the summer, including our Summer Success Program for current high school juniors and our paid SOAR Ambassador Program. Please visit the webpages for each program to learn more.

Yes, every year we partner with Build Hope Inc. support all eligible HACLA residents and SOAR students with applying for their scholarship. Students who are selected can be awarded $750 to $5,000 and receive academic support through college from our SOAR Education Navigators.

We also maintain and frequently update our SOAR Scholarship Database which lists upcoming scholarships for high school and college students.
Education Navigators are Project SOAR's college counseling staff who work and meet 1-on-1 with residents in person or virtually to provide college guidance, academic advising, and career support. Each housing community has one Education Navigator who can support residents with their educational goals. Meet our team here!
