Through HACLA's nonprofit organization, Build Hope Inc., the BHI Scholarship Program offers scholarships ranging from $750 to $5,000 annually to HACLA public housing and Section 8 residents throughout their college journey. The funds from BHI are are intended to provide students the extra funds they need to support themselves or their families during their college career. Recipients are encouraged to use the funds in the way that best meets their needs, whether it's for travel, local transportation, food, or purchasing books and supplies.
Two years ago, BHI increased the Scholarship Fund to incorporate a Returning Scholar Program, providing annual support to our recipients as they continue their journey through college. Additional funding allows students to focus on their studies, avoid working one- or two- jobs while studying, or potentially stepping away from school to support their families.
In order to increase access to through-college support, Build Hope Inc. and Project SOAR have partnered to ensure that all BHI Scholars enroll in Project SOAR to receive through-college support and bi-annual academic check-ins with an Education Navigator. In addition to facilitating the annual BHI Scholarship Application Workshops, Project SOAR also provides extensive recruitment, application assistance, and letters of support for all BHI Scholars.
