AAO 2022 Miami Beach

SLU Ortho had a great presence at 2022 AAO meeting:

Dr. Rolf Behrents

Dr. Rolf G. Behrents, professor emeritus of orthodontics at St. Louis University and the editor-in-chief of the American Journal of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics, was awarded the 2020 Albert H. Ketcham Memorial Award during the 2022 AAO Meeting.

The Albert H. Ketcham Memorial Award commemorates the achievements of Dr. Albert H. Ketcham. Created by the ABO in 1936, the award is presented annually to an individual who has made a notable contribution to the science and art of orthodontics.

Dr. Patrick Foley

The American Board of Orthodontics (ABO) installed Dr. Patrick F. Foley (Associate Professor) as president of the organization.

Each ABO director represents one of eight constituent organizations of the AAO and serves an eight-year term, which culminates in the position of the president. ABO directors are responsible for establishing policy with regard to the board certification of specialists in orthodontics. During his tenure as an ABO director, Dr. Foley has represented the Midwestern Society of Orthodontists (MSO).

First certified by the ABO in 1995, Dr. Foley is a member of the College of Diplomates of the American Board of Orthodontics (CDABO). He is a past president of the Illinois Society of Orthodontists and is a member of the World Federation of Orthodontists.

Dr. Mitchell Levine

Dr. Mitchell Levine (Associate Professor) was recently installed as president of the American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine (AADSM) — the leading national organization for dentists who treat sleep-disordered breathing, including obstructive sleep apnea and snoring.

Levine has been a member of the AADSM since 2010. Throughout that time, he has served on the Health Policy Education Committee, served as chair of the task force that wrote the Dental Sleep Medicine Standards for Screening, Treating and Managing Adults with Sleep-Related Breathing Disorders, was a member of the task force that developed the consensus recommendations on Identifying the Appropriate Therapeutic Position of an Oral Appliance, and served as a faculty member of the AADSM Mastery Program. He was also co-author of the Obstructive Sleep Apnea and Orthodontics: An American Association of Orthodontists White Paper.

Dr. Eustaquio Araujo

Dr. Eustaquio Araujo transitioned to Professor Emeritus on July 1, 2022.

Professor Eustáquio Afonso Araújo received his DDS degree from the Federal University of Minas Gerais, in Belo Horizonte, Brazil, in 1969. In 1981, he received his certificate in Orthodontics and Masters on Dental Sciences from the University of Pittsburgh, Pa. His professional life has been devoted to the orthodontic clinic, education, and research. As he returned to Brazil in 1981, he initiated his academic career as an Assistant Professor of the Pontifical Catholic University of Minas Gerais – PUCMinas – a traditional and highly recognized institution in the country. He soon became involved with administrative duties as well and was appointed Vice-Director and later Director of the Biology and Health Sciences Institute. Later on, he became the Dean of the Dental School.

In 2000, he applied for the Orthodontic Program Director position at Saint Louis University. He was selected and started his work at the end of that year. However, his commitment to the Catholic University in Brazil made him accept a position and return to his country in 2003 to lead a new vision for the Institution. He then became President of PUCMinas with its 42,000+ students and 5,000 professors and employees. During his tenure as PUCMinas President, Dr. Araujo never lost his ties with Orthodontics. During those 4 years, he continued to lecture at least two times a year at Saint Louis University. In 2007, his term as President of PUCMinas ended, and he did not accept a new term. He left PUCMinas with 55,000+ students.

He returned to Saint Louis University as a full-time professor and Associate Director for the Center for Advanced Dental Education, where he also served as Orthodontic Clinic Director, Program Director, and the Pete Sotiropoulos Endowed Professor of Orthodontics.

In 2015, received the Louis Jada Jarabak Award by the AAOF in recognition of his services to research, orthodontics and academics and, in 2018, the Dale Wade Award Excellence in Clinical Orthodontics by the American Board of Orthodontics.

Dr. Araujo has made many contributions to orthodontic education through research, an extensive number of publications and hundreds of lectures all over the world. Together with colleagues, he is responsible for a new textbook “Recognizing and Correcting Developing Malocclusions”. He is a member of the Brazilian Association of Orthodontics (ABOR), Angle Society of Orthodontics – Midwest Component, International College of Dentists, World Federation of Orthodontics, American College of Dentists, and a past President of the Brazilian Board of Orthodontics.

His leadership contributions and high moral values have always been present in the many administrative and academic positions, as well as strong community/political contributions. Dr. Araujo is married to Teresa Araujo, his soulmate and best friend, and has a daughter, Cristiana (Kika), an orthodontist in McKinney, Texas, and a son Francisco, a senior in Dental School married to Veronica, who lives in Belo Horizonte. The most important joy in their lives is their granddaughter Julia ,a sweet 3-year-old princess.

A life changing decision.

When I decided to accept my tenure at SLU, the first from 2000 to 2003, and the second from 2007 to 2022, I could never have imagined how much that decision would impact my professional and academic life. Now I can say that my life has two moments: before and after SLU. As I receive the Emeritus Professor status, I must thank all of those who have been part of these two short decades at SLU. My gratitude to all my present and past students, staff, colleagues, and upper administration. Thank you. I would do it all over again.  - by "Eustaquio Araujo"
