Dr. Lysle E. Johnston, Jr. Retired
Dr. Lysle E. Johnston, Jr., professor emeritus of orthodontics, gave his last lecture "After 43 years, a few closing comments" on June 10. He graduated from the University of Michigan School of Dentistry in 1961 and from Michigan’s Horace H. Rackham School of Graduate Studies (orthodontics) in 1964. He studied anatomy at the Queen’s University of Belfast (1961-2) and received a Ph.D. in anatomy from Case Western Reserve University in 1970. Before coming to the University of Michigan, he chaired the orthodontic departments at Case Western Reserve University (1971-6) and Saint Louis University (1976-91). At Michigan, he chaired the Department of Orthodontics and Pediatric Dentistry and was the Robert Browne Professor of Dentistry (1991-2004).
Dr. Ki Beom Kim
Dr. Ki Beom Kim (Program Director) has been appointed to Lysle E. Johnston, Jr. Endowed Chair in Orthodontics.
He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics and a Diplomate of the American Board of Orofacial Pain. Dr. Kim received his dental training from South Korea and his orthodontic training from Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, Tennessee. He has been teaching as a full time faculty at SLU Orthodontics since 2005.
Dr. Rolf Behrents
Dr. Rolf Behrents (Professor Emeritus) was awarded the 2020 Albert H. Ketcham Memorial Award. This award is awarded to an individual who has made a notable contribution to the science and art of orthodontics and is considered the highest achievement in the field of orthodontics. The award will be given at the 2020 AAO Annual Session in Atlanta, Georgia.
Dr. Eustaquio Araujo
Dr. Eustaquio Araujo (Professor) received the Dale B. Wade Award of Excellence in Orthodontics, awarded by the American Board of Orthodontics, during the 2019 AAO Annual meeting in Los Angeles, California. This award recognizes an exemplary senior clinician and board-certified orthodontist who demonstrates exceptional dedication to orthodontics through clinical excellence and/or devoted teaching in the image of Dale B. Wade, a past ABO president.
Dr. Patrick Foley
Dr. Foley (Associate Professor) is currently serving as an ABO director. He went to UIC, Marquette, University of Minnesota, and Mayo Clinic to do ABO Advocacy visits in the spring.
Dr. Julie McCray
Dr. McCray (Associate Professor, Clinic Director) has helped to fully implement a digital chart system and an intra-oral scanner to replace the traditional alginate impression.
Dr. Hiroshi Ueno
Dr. Ueno (Assistant Professor) became a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics. He took a case-based clinical examination in February and successfully passed the exam.
Dr. Brent Bankhead
Dr. Bankhead (Assistant Professor) helped to get a digital service from Dentsply Sirona. Through this, each resident can have access to a digital orthodontic treatment planning system, including an indirect bonding tray, SureSmile wire, and SureSmile Clear Aligner therapy.
Dr. J. Michael Hudson
Dr. Hudson has retired from his position as a clinical instructor at the end of June. He has been teaching at SLU for over 28 years and will continue to teach some didactic and hands-on classes include TMD and ARS.
Dr. Bryan Ganim
Dr. Bryan Ganim (Class of 2017) became a part-time orthodontic clinical instructor on April 4, 2019.
Dr. William Ka-Lun Choi
Dr. William Choi (Class of 1993) from Taipei, Taiwan was selected as a SLU Alumni Merit Award winner for 2019.
Dr. Choi has operated an orthodontic and temporomandibular disorders clinic in Taipei for more than 20 years. He is as dedicated to his profession as he is to service. He is a founding member and past president of the Chinese Christian Dental Services, an organization that provides dental care to orphans and underserved patients. He has organized more than 100 dental mission trips to countries including Cambodia, China, Gambia, India, Kenya and Myanmar. He collects and refurbishes pre-owned dental equipment and x-ray machines to send to countries establishing charity clinics.
Dee Opperman Retired
After 27 years working for SLU CADE, Dee has retired as of June 30, 2019.

ATLAS Potluck Lunch & Presentation: Dr. Shemer (Class of 2020) did a presentation about Israel and its dental education.

Dr. Nikhilesh Vaid
Dr. Vaid (Executive committee member of the World Federation of Orthodontists) gave a lecture titled "The Emperor's New Clothes! Aligner Science Revisited."
Dr. Anthony Puntillo
Dr. Puntillo (Crown Point, Indiana) gave a lecture titled "3D digital work flow with in-house 3D printing."
GORP 2019
The 31st annual Graduate Orthodontic Residents Program (GORP) will be held at St. Louis Union Station Hotel on July 25– 28, 2019.
Our students have been working really hard to prepare for this year's meeting.
