July 2018 News

Greetings,

I am very excited and honored to lead the SLU Graduate Orthodontic Program. I would like to thank Drs. Johnston, Behrents and Araujo for their dedication and service to our program, as well as the generosity and guidance they have shown over the years.

I also feel very fortunate to have met in person Drs. Ken Marshall and Pete and Gus Sotiropoulos. I have witnessed their love and passion for orthodontics, SLU, and OERF. Without them, we would not be where we are today.

We are facing enormous challenges in orthodontics. Research findings are no longer highly valued, baseless claims from orthodontic companies are rampant, traditional knowledge and wisdom are considered irrelevant, and people are mainly interested in so-called orthodontic pearls. Instead of dwelling on this trend, I would like to focus more on the critical thinking skills of our bright, young orthodontic residents, so they are not carried away by this trend.

We have an excellent reputation and are considered one of the best programs in the U.S. We are known for outstanding clinical orthodontic education, and I would like to continue this superb legacy while also promoting high-quality research. Furthermore, our international reputation has grown. To achieve the goal of becoming one of the best programs in the world, I am asking for your continued support, but not just financially. We need your time, love, and engagement in national and local organizations to promote our program.

One person alone cannot make this happen, but by working together, it certainly will be possible to achieve our goals. We hope to become the best program in the world, and you will be proud to be a graduate of such a prestigious institution.

Thank you,

Ki Beom Kim, DDS, MSD, PhD

Alexis Azar Posnanski, M.A.

Senior Director of Development

Greetings from Dreiling-Marshall Hall! 2017 and the first half of 2018 has been a record setting fundraising year for SLU and I am proud to report that the fundraising arm of the orthodontic program has contributed to the overall success. One of the reasons the ortho department has had a great year is thanks to the mini campaign Dr. Lysle Johnston has helped create. He generously agreed to donate $50,000 to the Dr. Lysle Johnston Endowed Professorship in Orthodontics if others pitch in and donate an additional $50,000. The goal of this campaign is to elevate his named professorship fund to the Dr. Lysle Johnston Endowed Chair in Orthodontics, which would create the first endowed chair in the orthodontic department! Thanks to all who have already donated and if you have not, I am happy to talk to you about making a gift to support this worthy endeavor. I will be in touch regarding a celebration that will take place in the fall to honor Dr. Johnston's gift and the elevation of his named fund from an endowed professorship to an endowed chair. Thanks to all who attended SLU's reception during this year's AAO Conference in Washington D.C. Please feel free to reach out to me at alexis.posnanski@slu.edu or give me a call at 314-977-2247. Thanks for the continued support to the orthodontics department!
