The goal of the pediatric career exploration elective is to provide third year students interested in pediatrics an additional opportunity to build pediatric knowledge, refine physician skills, and progress in individual career journeys. Students will spend a week scheduled during the family and/or OB-Gyn clerkships in one of several potential clinical sites. After reviewing brief site descriptions, students have an opportunity to rank preferences via an intake form. Some sites are available only to students who have already completed the pediatric clerkship. Availability of all sites is dependent on enrollment of residents and fourth year students. In order to ensure sites for pediatric clerkship students, CE-302 is a waiting list only course. We are optimistic about finding spots for all students. A specific pediatric site will be assigned at the latest 30d before the start of the clerkship block based on availability and student preferences. We also additionally strongly encourage you to review Pediatric Career Planning resources.
*Potentially open: specific site availability is dependent on elective enrollment of residents, fourth year students, and pediatric clerkship student number and site preferences
** Blue and red teams: Due to clerkship scheduling, potentially available only during weeks 3 or 5 of the block
**Neuro-oncology. Open only to students who have experienced blue team and/or pediatric hematology-oncology clinic. The course director further requests interested students contact her prior to enrolling
Career Explorations are P/F courses. The final grade and narrative will be determined by the site director based on his/her own observation and input from the team.
Pick a CE that will be most helpful in your career planning. For students who are either undecided or considering careers outside of the core clerkships, CEs are a unique opportunity to explore sites that are NOT options during the third year clerkships, Eg. radiology, anesthesia, pathology, etc. We strongly encourage you to take advantage of that opportunity!
