Welcome to Pediatric Neuro-Oncology!
Pediatric neuro-oncology service provides consultative health care to children with known or suspected CNS malignancies.
Learners will continue to build knowledge regarding common and/or important pediatric CNS disease processes and syndromes. Skill building will focus on history taking and physical exam with special emphasis on CNS assessment, clinical reasoning and decision making, development and implementation of evaluation and management plans, patient/family communication, medical documentation, patient advocacy, and multidisciplinary collaboration as it pertains to children with CNS malignancy concerns.

M4 on elective (2wks): Contact Dr. Navalkele at least a week before starting to know directions to her office, discuss your rotation goals, objectives, strategies, the day/time of neuropathology review (variable), as well as any schedule requests.

Clerkship students will participate in neuro-oncology clinics only and should expect the following:
Monday: self study, prepare for tues-wed-thur neuro-oncology clinic by reviewing Dr. Navalkele’s CG Costas clinic schedule on EPIC and reading the latest progress note on each patient.
Tuesday to Thursday: shadowing Dr. Navalkele in the clinic.
Friday: self study, reading articles in CNS tumors folder
M4 students (elective for 2 wks) will have the opportunity to participate in neuro-oncology clinic, multidisciplinary brain tumor, Neurofibromatosis, and Tuberous Sclerosis clinics, neuroradiology and pathology reviews. Dr. Navalkele will lend you the WHO textbook on arrival.
After actively observing 1-2 patient visits, you may see a patient independently. Obtain a focused history from the patient and caregiver and perform a focused physical exam
Present the history, physical exam, as well as your assessment, differential, and plan to the attending physician
Go back with the attending physician to discuss the assessment and plan with the family
Write a detailed original note on EPIC on at least 1 patient per week. Avoid copying the attending note/complex plan in your note.
Case presentation. Students are expected to give a 10min oral presentation (PowerPoint is optional) based on a case they saw during the rotation. The presentation typically takes place on the last Friday of the rotation.
Journal club. Students are expected to critique a research article and discuss it with Dr. Navalkele also typically during the last Friday of the rotation.

Participate in the “Ringing the Bell” when you get a chance. This is a brief ceremony in honor of a patient’s last chemotherapy. The patient gets to ring the bell while team members sing “Happy Last Chemo” to the tune of Happy Birthday while blowing bubbles and using noisemakers.
Dr. Navalkele will give you a brief in-person evaluation on the last day. She would like your honest feedback on how helpful you found the elective and what could be done to make it more meaningful /educational.
