During the pre-clerkship block (~18mo) students build medical knowledge and skill foundation. Courses and USMLE 1 are P/F which allow room to explore interests within and outside of medicine. The curriculum includes a required elective during the fall and spring semesters of first year with the option for another elective or serving as the M2 elective lead in the fall of second year. The Department of Pediatrics offers a number of pre-clerkship electives. Additional electives relevant to children’s are included through other departments. Although students are able to enroll in only one preclinical elective at a time (via the elective lottery), they are able to audit or informally participate in others. We strongly encourage students considering Pediatrics as a career choice to meet with us prior to elective enrollment to discuss elective options that will best fit your interests. We further invite students who have completed an elective as a first year to consider coming back as student leads during second year. The pre-clerkship block concludes with an independent study period and USMLE step 1.
