One of the things our pediatric student education team and other faculty members enjoy most about working with students is witnessing this growth and seeing everyone find the right spot. While the resources below are focused on pediatric career planning, recommendations are applicable across specialties.

Start career planning ASAP
- Approach all courses with an open mind and be proactive in considering how each will help you move further along in your career journey. For instance in addition to considering whether you see yourself as a future pediatrician, our courses also gives you an opportunity to explore additional career questions.
Do you like taking care of kids or do you want all your patients fully grown? Many specialties other than pediatrics include the care of children.
Do you see yourself being solely hospital based, solely clinic based, or doing a combination of the two?
Do you want to be a generalist or a subspecialist?
Do you like procedures?
Would you enjoy practicing in a teaching environment?
- Take time to consider these questions and talk to others who have made various career decisions as you rotate with us and with other departments.
One of the great things about having learners at different training levels is everyone has been exactly where you are right now! Acting interns, interns, seniors, fellows and attendings are an invaluable resource to you as you think about career planning. What made them decide on pediatrics or a pediatric subspecialty? What made them decide on a specific residency program? What are the positives and negatives of pediatrics?
Dr. King, Dr. Heithaus along with all other pediatric faculty members, residents, and fourth year students would be more than happy to meet with you both during and outside of the pediatric courses. We hope each pediatric rotation will take you further along this important and exciting journey!
