The elective consists of: active clinical observation at minimum of three ambulatory or inpatient pediatric sites, small group sessions, and individual work. We deliberately keep requirements at a minimum. At the same time we share a number of additional resources that will help students get the most benefit from the elective.
The elective was very much a student driven project led by Colin Dolan along with 4 of his class of 2022 colleagues. Our goal was to provide first and second year students an opportunity for early exposure to the awesome field of Pediatrics. At SLU as well as nationally, Pediatrics tends to be underrepresented in the pre-clerkship curriculum. The first elective students joined us in the fall of 2019. Some of our early outcomes were establishing faculty-student connections as well as early pediatric exposure and career planning. We presented the elective at the national council on medical student education in pediatrics conference in 2021. The elective continues to be a work in progress with tweaks driven by student feedback every year. We look forward to hearing your ideas on how we can improve the course for future students!

Build relationships with third and fourth year medical students on clinical rotations! They typically are willing to show you around
While not required, EPIC access will help you get most out of the active observation experiences by allowing you to preview medical record of patients you will be seeing. All medical students are required to obtain EPIC access prior to starting the clerkship year. It’s a bit painful and there is no great time to do it. The upside is that you only have to do it once!
Overview
