2019 Drama Club election

The 2019 SLOHS Drama Club election was held on May 25, 2019. It was the last annual presidential election before the merge of Drama Club, Improv Team, and Iambic Pentameter. The junior ticket of Maggie Zuniga and Evan Clausen were appointed Drama Club presidents over the senior ticket of Bella Gerencser and Lauren Ramirez. The appointment was announced by exiting presidents Cati Newlon and Ella Livingston at the annual Drama Banquet.

While nomination and appointment were informal within the Drama Club, incoming seniors Gerencser and Ramirez were in discussions to take over the club from early on. In a surprise move, however, incumbents Newlon and Livingston gave the presidency to younger leaders Zuniga and Clausen. The decision was controversial due to prior assurances of a Gerencser-Ramirez victory, but despite being contested by members of the club, was ultimately ruled valid. The immediate repercussions of the election sparked a debate over exclusivity and elitism in office, resulting in an upheaval of governance culminating in the 2021 club reconfiguration as SLOHS Performing Arts.

In related news, actor Ian McKay was elected President of Iambic Pentameter at the 2019 Shakespeare Banquet, having run unopposed. Comedians Kathy ZagRodny and Niki Lauritzen were appointed Presidents of the Improv Team.
