President

This article refers to the presidency of the Performing Arts Company. For other presidential offices and the history of the presidency, see Drama Club president.

The President of SLOHS Performing Arts is the head of club of San Luis Obispo High School Performing Arts. The president leads the collection of performing arts groups on campus and is traditionally one of the most involved actors of the group.

The president also leads the leadership board of SLOHS Performing Arts as well as the Performing Arts Company.

The office was established on April 27, 2021 with the merging of Drama Club, Improv Team, and Iambic Pentameter. Elections for the first office holder took place in May 2021. While the retired office of Drama Club president has technically been transformed into the Commissioner of Drama, the Performing Arts presidency assumes much of the duties of the Drama Club presidency. Presidents hold the power to add or remove members of the club and the Company, and hold joint control over club finances with the faculty adviser and the ASB Interclub Commissioner. The president has the authority to alter, ratify, or repeal club rules. They also assist the faculty adviser in the selection of productions.

Presidents are elected annually in late spring for the following school year. While Drama Club presidents were appointed by their predecessor(s), the Performing Arts presidency operates under a democratic system of majority vote. Vice presidential candidates do not run on joint tickets.

There are three key qualifications for holding the presidency: attendance at San Luis Obispo High School; at least a ninth grader at the time of their appointment; and prior membership in the club for at least one year. Because incoming freshmen are ineligible for office, no president may serve more than three one-year terms, except in the case that a president is subject to grade retention.

Lindsay Smith was the first and most recent president of SLOHS Performing Arts, serving two terms from 2021–2023. Her successor, Charley Beck, was elected in spring 2023 and is set to take office on August 17, 2023.
