President

Drama Club

This article refers to the dissolved presidency of Drama Club. For the presidency of SLOHS Performing Arts see President.

The Presidents of the Drama Club were the heads of club of the San Luis Obispo High School Drama Club. The presidents led the Drama Company and were traditionally the most involved actors of the group.

On April 27, 2021, Drama Club was officially dissolved and incorporated into the umbrella organization SLOHS Performing Arts as the Department of Drama; the presidents at the time served as acting department heads until the election of the first vice president of SLOHS Performing Arts, who the Performing Arts Constitution dictates will also hold the office of commissioner of drama. The Drama Club presidency was formally dissolved after the transfer of power was completed.

The office of the president was established in 1961 alongside the first extracurricular incarnation of Drama Club. It has been known to be held by a single officer, different officers for fall and spring, or dual co-presidents. Presidents held the power to add or remove members of the club and the Drama Club, and held joint control over club finances with the faculty adviser and the ASB Interclub Commissioner. The president had the authority to alter, ratify, or repeal club rules. They also assisted the faculty adviser in the selection of productions and were historically the most likely club members to student direct a play.

In the final years of the office's existence, incumbent president(s) of the club appointed their successor(s) at the conclusion of their term or upon their own graduation. There was no formal application or election process; candidates were chosen based on several holistic factors including involvement in the club and age seniority.

There were three key presumed qualifications for holding the presidency: attendance at San Luis Obispo High School; at least a ninth grader at the time of their appointment; and prior membership in the club for at least one year. Because appointments are made in the spring for the following school year, incoming freshmen are ineligible for office; thus, no president may have served more than three one-year terms, except in the case that a president was subject to grade retention.

Frequently, but not universally, Drama Club presidents also concurrently served as leaders of Iambic Pentameter, the club's Shakespeare branch. The last individuals to do so were 2017–2018 creative director Augusta Holyfield and her assistant director Ella Livingston; Holyfield served as Drama Club co-president the same year, while Livingston succeeded her for 2018–2019. After the incorporation of both Drama and Iambic Pentameter into SLOHS Performing Arts, it is no longer be possible for one individual to lead both departments at once; both presidencies have been transitioned to exclusive commissioner offices.

In 1971, the program was taken over by adviser Joyce Radmanovich, who implemented many large changes in the organization; leadership records are absent from that point on, so it is assumed that Radmanovich discontinued student leadership. The offices of president and vice president were brought back at some point in the 1990s or 2000s, though it is unclear when; the offices of secretary and treasurer did not return until 2021.

Maggie Zuniga and Evan Clausen were the last presidents of the Drama Club and acting commissioners of drama; rough estimates based on yearbook records place them as the club's 56th presidents. They were appointed to the position on May 25, 2019 by predecessors Cati Newlon and Ella Livingston, and took office on August 20, 2019. Their second term, amidst the coronavirus pandemic, began on August 24, 2020 and ended on June 8, 2021.
