Maggie Zuniga
About
Maggie Zuniga is an actor, singer, and writer who served as Co-President of the Drama Club from 2019 to 2021. They are known for their work at SLO Repertory Theatre, as well as numerous leading roles on the San Luis Obispo High School stage. Zuniga was the first non-binary president and the first Hispanic president in 50 years.
Zuniga made their SLOHS debut in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2017). They gained notability in 2018 for playing Rose Alvarez in Bye Bye Birdie, the first freshman in recent history to land a leading role. Zuniga's early success with the program, coupled with their past experience in community theater, quickly made them a staple leading actor; they graduated in 2021 with six leading credits to their name. Zuniga began venturing into behind-the-scenes work in their sophomore year, serving as assistant director for Be More Chill (2018) and lighting technician for Runaways (2019).
In an upset victory at the end of their sophomore year, Zuniga won the 2019 Drama Club presidential election alongside actor Evan Clausen. As co-president, Zuniga faced an unprecedented barrage of obstacles to production, including a temporary ban on student direction, lack of a viable faculty adviser, and construction on the school theater. Zuniga spearheaded a campaign on behalf of the club to bring back the spring musical, using gym space at the adjacent SLCUSD Adult School, which ultimately proved successful. Zuniga later gained praise for their handling of the COVID-19 pandemic, working with faculty to build a virtual theater program and finding innovative ways to circumnavigate school closures.
For their work in the CTE theatre pathway and as a leader in the Drama Club, Zuniga received the 2021 Golden Tiger Award for Advanced Theatre.
