Golden Tiger Award for Excellence in Theatre

The Golden Tiger Award for Excellence in Theatre is an award that can be given by SLOHS teachers to outstanding students in the theater pathway. While Golden Tigers traditionally recognize academic success, extracurricular efforts also influence these awards, due to the unique bifurcated nature of the theater program.

As each teacher can only give up to three awards per year for all of their classes, and no current theater teachers teach theater exclusively, it is not guaranteed that awards for theater will be given every year. Until 2019, teachers were able to give a Golden Tiger award to one student from each class, so up to that point, Golden Tigers were much more frequent at all levels of the theater pathway.

The most recent winners of this award are Ava Walsh for Advanced Theatre and Mariana Navarro for Intro to Performing Arts.

In 2020, the SLOHS music department introduced the Golden Tiger Award for Excellence in Musical Theatre. While holding close ties to the drama program, this award is not given by theater faculty; rather, it is given by the choir director to students participating in Show Choir. As choir directors typically only instruct the three main branches of choir at SLOHS (chamber, concert, and show), directors usually give one Golden Tiger for each choir. Recipients of this award are usually also prominent members of Performing Arts Company.
