Computer Science and the problem solving and IT skills it develops can be useful in many different careers such as information technology and information management, engineering and manufacturing, construction, broadcast media and performing arts, management, journalism and publishing, and medical technology.
The aim of National 5 computing science is to highlight how computing professionals are problem-solvers and designers, and focuses on the far-reaching impact of information technology on our environment and society.
Pupils will build knowledge and practical skills in four main areas of computing science. More information about these areas can be found below.
The software we use within the National 5 course is available free to all pupils. Information on the software we use and where you can download this can be found in the unit information area.
Pupils develop their programming and computational-thinking skills by building practical solutions and explaining how these programs work. They are expected to analyse problems, and design, implement, test and evaluate their solutions.

Software Used - Microsoft Access
All pupils can download Microsoft Access free via the Glow Launchpad.
Look for the tile called "Download Office Now" and select this to download Microsoft Access.
Pupils develop an understanding of how data and instructions are stored in binary form and basic computer architecture. They gain an awareness of the environmental impact of the energy use of computing systems and security precautions that can be taken to protect computer systems.
This is the only non-practical unit of the course and requires no software.
Course Assessment
