Year 5 Internet Use

Session 1

In this session we will look at how the internet works and ways to investigate topics using the internet.

You are all familiar with researching topics on the internet but few of us get further than just typing in words to Google and accepting what comes back. In this unit we will explore more of the search engine’s tricks and hidden techniques. We will also think about things to beware of!

First of all, let's just think for a moment about what we think the internet is...

We all use SEARCH ENGINES like Google or Bing to find information on the internet, but how do they work?

What do they do to find information so quickly?

How do search engines work?Search engines are a great way to find information on the web. Find out how search works including search algorithms and web crawlers.

What do you want to find out?

TEACHER's notes

It is important to know what and why you are researching.

Let's assume you want to find out more about RIVERS.

  • Spend a few minutes thinking with a partner about what you might put into Google, Bing, Swiggle or Kiddle to find out things you don't already know about RIVERS.

    • Make a list:

o Are there any that might bring up adult content? Decide the actions you should take if this happens.

o Are there any that definitely won’t work?

Your Challenge

In groups of 3, put some of your ideas into a search engine and see what comes up.

  • One person use Google, another Swiggle and a third is Bing

  • Compare what each search engine gives you.

      • Which one gives the best results for you? Why do you think this?

  • How could you improve what you enter in the search bar to get the information you actually want?
