REMEMBER:
Teachers will need to use their y5teacher@sjsapps.co.uk login to access the work that children have done. The password is in the planning on the SJS school system.
Show the video clips on BBC Bitesize and discuss how the internet works and then what search engines are and how they work.
Make a list of search engines the class have heard of and add in ones they have not, such as Ecosia, Yahoo and Duck Duck Go. Maybe explore some of these and compare them.
Next get the class to brainstorm what they might put in to a search engine to find out about Vikings (or what ever topic you are pursuing).
Share ideas and discuss what these might bring up in the search.
In groups of three, one person put the search ideas into Google, another into Bing and the third into Dick Duck Go (links are in the learning page)
Compare what comes up in the different search engines. Which would you use and why?

NOTES
Google is a general commercially orientated search engine which will bring up anything it finds on a subject, especially sites trying to sell you something.
You might want pictures or videos in which case click on the video or pictures option at the top of Google, Yahoo, Bing etc but beware that inappropriate images easily get through the filtering systems.
The school has a filtering system which looks for certain words and tags that could be inappropriate and blocks them. This is not fool proof.
Starting with the BBC site, NASA or some other specialist site can be better than using Google. For example, when looking for video clips for class use I would go to BBC Bitesize.
