Session 1
In this unit you will explore:
What computer networks are
Different types of networks and how they fit together
How information from all over the world gets to your computer or digital device
INTERNETWORK = Internet
connecting between networks (things joined together.
SERVER = main computer storing in formation for the network.
SWITCH = connection point for all devises on the network.
CLIENT = all the devices on the network connected to the server.
PROTOCOLS = rules that all devices follow so that they can talk to each other.
INTERNET PROTOCOL ADDRESS = IP ADDRESS
every device/webpage has it's own, unique address so that it can be found on the network.
The school has it's own Local Area Network linking all the devices in the building together through cables, wireless routers and switches to the server. The server then has a link to the Internet to access networks outside school.

Now play the Build a Network Game as a class. Your teacher should have downloaded the cards and rules from the Teacher's Notes page for you to use.
When you walk around the school, open your eyes and find evidence of the parts that make up the Local Area Network (LAN) for the school.
