How can we communicate?
To complete your work at Shakespeare Junior School you are going to create a multimedia presentation about an aspect of your life at this school.
First let’s review the media that we can use for your presentation about your school life so far.
What ways have we of creating a presentation?
Sound
Audacity
Podcasting
Spot effects
Music
Mp3, WAVE files etc
Vision
Video
Youtube
Vimeo
Digital still pictures
Animation
MP4, AVI, WMV etc
Presentation Software
Powerpoint
Prezi
Media Player
iTunes
Activ Inspire
Lynx
iMovie
SCRATCH
In the Autumn you made a Powerpoint Presentation, in the past you have made a podcast, editing the sound in Audacity. As a grand finale, you are to make a movie presentation about an aspect of life at this school.
The first moving pictures were on film. Now we use digital recordings.
In year 5 you used stop-frame animation to turn “stills” into “movies”.
This year your challenge will be to make a 2 to 3 minute Video (podcast) to promote Shakespeare Junior. This is to be posted on the internet for others to see.

This is a live action film about a school. What would you put into a similar film about Shakespeare Junior School? What elements did they have to put together to make their film:
Shots/story board
Music
Editing
TASK:
In small teams (no more than 4?) brainstorm what you could include in a film about life at Shakespeare Junior School. You could:
§ Video or audio record pupils comments about what is good about the school.
§ Introduce the caring and approachable teaching staff.
§ Give a guided tour of the school’s facilities.
§ Capture elements of a school day and edit it together to music.
Planning a 2 minute film
This is the hardest part –deciding what the message of your film will be. What are you going to communicate to your audience so that they finish watching your film thinking “wow!” ?
Today it is time to plan what you are going to put in your film. You can change your ideas as they develop, but it is important to strategically plan what you are going to “shoot” with your camera so that you have all the material you need before you start putting it together.
Resource: Story board planning sheet.
Look at some examples of storyboards to establish what they are and what they contain.
Use the storyboard template to map out ideas for a school film.
Plenary
Groups pitch their movie ideas to the “Film Company” (the teacher or class) to gain “funding” (permission to proceed).
Present story boards using the class Visualiser.
Information
A storyboard is a graphic representation of how your video will unfold, shot by shot. It is made up of a number of squares with illustrations or pictures representing each shot, with notes about what’s going on in the scene and what’s being said in the script during that shot. Think of it as sort of a comic book version of your script.
Using I-Movie
· Watch the “How to use imovie” video.

https://support.apple.com/en-gb/HT210831#ios
In pairs either use clips saved on the ipad by the teacher, or “play” with clips shot in class to familiarise yourself with the features of imovie.
Plenary
Each pair gives a “master class” of what they have learnt to another pair OR
Pairs share a “Tip of the Day” to the class of something they have discovered about I-movie.
Be able to plan a film shoot for a short film.
“I can slit the scenes into what has to be filmed in each location”
Strategic
TASK
Before you shoot your film, you need to plan who, what, where and how you are going to get the material you need.
So far you have:
Decided on your “big idea” è made the story board of what is going to be in the film è trained yourself on how to use the editing software. Now it is time to plan the “shoot”.
· Use the SHOOT planning sheet to plan your time and resources carefully so that you use the limited equipment and lime effectively. Multimedia Resources\Shoot Plan.docx
Plenary
· Share the plan and discuss practicalities.
Be able to shoot and save footage ready for reading stage.
“I can shoot the material and gather all the things I need ready to edit it into a 2 minute film.”
Persevere
Strategic
TASK
· Shoot what is needed in each location and save it in a folder that can be accessed by imovie.
Edit film.
“I can edit a film”
Acitive
Innovate
TASK:
· Use imovie to edit the footage and sounds into a 2 minute film
· With permission from the participants’ parents, upload the resultant film onto Vimeo.
Know how to embed a video into a website and write the “blurb” for it.
“I can embed a video into a website”
Innovation
TASK
· Using the skills you developed in the web publishing unit, make a web page advertising your short film and embed the video for the world to see.
· Don’t forget to get permission from the parents of children featured in the video before publishing.
