Now that you have practised searching for information and images, let's look at searching maps. When we search for things, it's usually to answer questions like:
where is somewhere?
how large is it?
what does it look like?
how can you get there?
and so on....
For this session our questions might be:
Why would I use a map search?
What does a map search tell me that words and pictures don't?
What types of map are there?
How can I use maps?
Here are some digital maps you can find on the internet. Click on each one a see how easy it is to find somewhere you know. You could try your school or home.
This system use Ordnance Survey (OS) baps as it's base
Google Maps, maps created by Google. This is what you get if you do a Google search.
Maps created by the Ordnance Survey. Until recently these were the only detailed maps of the UK. You have to pay for full features on this one.
Maps of the world created by volunteers. Anyone can contribute and correct the mapping for their area. These maps are used by lots of organisations for free.
